Chief Technology Officer - Software Solutions

Utilus is seeking a forward-thinking and hands-on Chief Technical Officer (CTO) to lead their growing Engineering organisation through one of the most transformative moments in software development. In the CTO role, you will not only oversee this critical infrastructure, you will also guide Utilus through the AI revolution that is reshaping their industry. With the rise of LLMs and generative tools, they are evolving how software is designed, delivered, and maintained. We are looking for a Senior Technical Leader who can navigate, adapt, and lead the team through this change., Team Leadership & People Management:

• You lead, grow, and organise all technical staff and contractors (architects, developers, DevOps, etc.)
• You are a People Manager, who leads and manages the Engineering team to deliver high-quality outcomes and mentoring and coaches team members on their career- and personal development
• You foster a culture of accountability, learning, and innovation

Technology & Project Oversight:

• You own the architecture, delivery, and reliability of mission-critical and 24/7 software systems
• You ensure solutions meet rigorous non-functional requirements within defined budgets
• You collaborate with the Head of Delivery to implement and evolve engineering best practices (CI/CD, test automation, code quality, security, etc.)

Support the Energy Transition:

• You deliver and maintain real-time platforms that manage large networks of distributed energy resources
• You ensure their systems support the energy market’s need for flexibility, visibility, and sustainability at scale

Lead Through the AI Shift:

• You make sure that Utilus champion the strategic use of LLMs and AI across their engineering workflows
• You guide teams in adopting and adapting to AI-driven development tools and practices
• You keep Utilus ahead of the curve as software engineering rapidly evolves

Evolve the Utilus Method:

• You own and improve the Utilus Method - their structured approach to delivering software systems
• You ensure all engineers and contractors are trained and aligned to the Utilus methodology and that it evolves with new technologies and insights

• Master’s or PhD degree in computer science (or related field)
• You have >5 years experience in a Senior Technical Leadership role (e.g. CTO, VP Engineering) and leading teams successfully
• You are enthusiastic about technology with a commitment to staying abreast of the latest technological trends and advancements
• You can easily think, act and switch on an operational, tactical and strategic level. You have experience in change management. Also you are able to make well-informed decisions in complex and dynamic situations
• You have a track record of delivering high-scale, always-on software systems
• You have a strong understanding of AI, LLMs, and their impact on software development
• You have a passion for leading in fast-changing technical environments
• Alignment with Utilus’s mission to support green energy and sustainability through technology
• Your communication skills in English are excellent, Dutch is a plus
• Experience in the energy domain is a plus
