Job description
The Network Engineer supports the Air Force Rapid Sustainment Office (RSO) by providing advanced network architecture, engineering, and cybersecurity sustainment for software-intensive technologies. The RSO increases mission readiness by rapidly identifying, applying, and scaling technology essential to the operation and sustainment of the U.S. Air Force. This role bridges technical network execution with rigorous DoD compliance frameworks to design, deploy, and maintain a secure, closed, isolated network environment replicated across three distinct operational sites, while engineering the framework for future secure interconnections and NIPR cloud integration. Success in this role comes from teamwork, mutual respect for each other’s talents and unique perspectives, and ensuring total network compliance with strict DoD security mandates.
Requirements
- Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related technical field, combined with a minimum of 7 years of progressive IT position experience and 5+ years of relevant network engineering or architecture experience.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of systems and networking software, hardware routing/switching protocols, firewalls, and networking hardware. Practical experience with virtualization platforms (VMware or equivalent), scripting/automation utilities, and implementing local security policies on Windows and Linux operating systems.
- Regulatory/Certifications: Must meet DoD 8140 (formerly 8570) compliance by holding a valid Information Assurance Technician (IAT) Level II baseline certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+ CE) on the hire date. Direct operational familiarity with the NIST RMF process, DISA STIG application, and the eMASS platform is required.
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
- 7+ years of dedicated U.S. DoD cybersecurity and network engineering experience.
- Possession of higher-level professional networking or security certifications (e.g., CCNP, CCIE, JNCIP, CASP+, CISSP).
- Operational experience with industrial control network security, additive manufacturing environments, or secure development operations systems.
- Experience administering approved government cloud architectures (e.g., AWS GovCloud, Microsoft Azure Government, CloudOne).
