Job description

  • COMPA Industries is recruiting on behalf of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) for a Solutions Architect 4 â?? SAP S/4HANA Data Migration Lead supporting Project Nexus and LANL’s broader enterprise data modernization initiative.
  • LANL is moving its enterprise resource planning environment to a cloud-based SAP platform, including a greenfield S/4HANA implementation. Ariba, Concur, and Fieldglass are already part of the broader SAP ecosystem, and the future-state data architecture will include SAP Business Data Cloud connected to Databricks.
  • This role will serve as LANL’s internal senior authority on SAP data migration. The selected candidate will oversee, evaluate, and challenge the System Integrator’s recommendations while helping LANL make the right decisions regarding migration architecture, data quality, cost, risk, governance, cutover, and long-term operational impact.
  • The ideal candidate is not a passive reviewer. This person must be able to translate highly technical migration guidance into practical, actionable decisions for LANL leadership and delivery teams. The role requires someone who can identify unnecessary risk, prevent runaway costs, and ensure that short-term implementation choices do not create long-term operational burdens., Client-Side Data Migration Leadership
  • Serve as LANL’s senior internal expert for SAP S/4HANA data migration.
  • Act as the primary technical peer to the System Integrator’s data migration lead.
  • Independently review the System Integrator’s migration strategy, architecture, assumptions, plans, and deliverables.
  • Challenge recommendations that create unnecessary technical risk, cost, schedule impact, audit exposure, or downstream operational burden.
  • Advise LANL leadership on migration architecture decisions and translate technical options into clear business and program recommendations.
  • Help determine when to accept the System Integrator’s judgment, when to request additional evidence, when to escalate, and when LANL should hold its position.
  • Protect LANL’s long-term interests throughout design, migration, cutover, and post-go-live support.

SAP S/4HANA Architecture and Data Modeling

  • Provide expert guidance on SAP S/4HANA data models and the structural differences between legacy ERP platforms and the future SAP environment.
  • Advise on source-to-target mapping and legacy-concept-to-SAP-concept translation.
  • Guide migration decisions involving:
  • SAP Business Partner
  • Universal Journal
  • Material Ledger
  • Finance and Controlling
  • Supply Chain
  • Human Capital Management
  • Plant Maintenance and Enterprise Asset Management
  • Customer, vendor, material, and enterprise master data
  • Identify cross-functional data dependencies that may affect business readiness, reconciliation, or cutover.
  • Evaluate migration tooling based on functionality, cost, scalability, schedule, security, and auditability.

SAP Business Data Cloud and Databricks Integration

  • Provide architectural guidance for SAP Business Data Cloud and its role within LANL’s future-state S/4HANA data landscape.
  • Advise on integration patterns between SAP S/4HANA, SAP Business Data Cloud, and Databricks.
  • Evaluate BDC connector designs and recommend appropriate data movement, replication, staging, transformation, and access patterns.
  • Help define how SAP transactional data should support enterprise analytics, reporting, AI/ML, reconciliation, and operational use cases.
  • Recommend appropriate use of Databricks, Snowflake, or equivalent platforms for data staging, validation, transformation, reconciliation, and analytics.
  • Advise on zero-copy, replicated, and traditional ETL patterns where appropriate.
  • Ensure the future data architecture supports security, governance, classification, and long-term maintainability.

Legacy Oracle and Enterprise Data Migration

  • Support the migration of data from Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle ODS, and other legacy enterprise systems into SAP S/4HANA.
  • Bridge Oracle source-system concepts with SAP target-system structures.
  • Identify gaps between legacy data definitions and future-state SAP business processes.
  • Advise on extraction, transformation, staging, reconciliation, and archival strategies.
  • Evaluate legacy dependencies that may create operational, reporting, or compliance issues after migration.
  • Ensure that important legacy concepts are not lost, misinterpreted, or silently excluded during transformation.

Hands-On Workstream Coordination

  • Lead day-to-day coordination of LANL’s internal data migration workstream across business and technical domains.
  • Maintain the data migration plan and identify slippage, dependencies, and delivery risks early.
  • Track System Integrator deliverables, decisions, risks, issues, assumptions, and open actions.
  • Facilitate working sessions with LANL data owners, functional leads, architects, engineers, security personnel, and the System Integrator.
  • Drive open actions and decisions to completion.
  • Coordinate dependencies across Finance, Supply Chain, Human Resources, Plant Maintenance, EAM, and master-data teams.
  • Help resolve delivery issues without unnecessarily deferring decisions upward.

Data Quality, Cleansing, and Reconciliation

  • Establish and monitor data cleansing and quality standards across all migration domains.
  • Validate that quality thresholds are appropriate for S/4HANA go-live and long-term operations.
  • Coordinate cleansing activities with business data owners and ensure remediation remains on schedule.
  • Identify risks the System Integrator may not surface, including:
  • Missing legacy concepts
  • Incomplete source data
  • Silent data loss
  • Invalid transformation logic
  • Cross-domain dependencies
  • Duplicate or conflicting records
  • Reconciliation gaps
  • Unsupported business processes
  • Organize and track mock migration and load cycles.
  • Independently review reconciliation results rather than relying solely on System Integrator conclusions.
  • Ensure business teams complete validation activities within established cycle windows.
  • Confirm that findings and defects are resolved before subsequent load cycles.

Governance, Compliance, and Cutover

  • Ensure migration activities comply with LANL data-classification policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Translate security and compliance requirements into practical data migration controls.
  • Establish appropriate controls for extraction, transfer, staging, transformation, validation, retention, and loading.
  • Maintain the data migration cutover plan and coordinate activities with the System Integrator and LANL technical teams.
  • Support fallback, recovery, and contingency planning.
  • Prepare data-readiness assessments for go/no-go decisions.
  • Provide independent risk assessments to program leadership.
  • Support data-related issue resolution during go-live and hypercare.

Reporting and Communication

  • Provide clear migration status reporting to program and executive leadership.
  • Maintain risks, actions, issues, decisions, and dependencies within the program RAID log.
  • Translate technical findings into understandable business impacts and recommended actions.
  • Present confidently to executive, business, functional, and technical audiences.
  • Communicate effectively with System Integrator leadership, SAP architects, Oracle specialists, Databricks engineers, cyber security teams, and business stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, business systems, data management, or a related discipline.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred; extensive directly related experience may substitute for formal education.
  • 15+ years of enterprise SAP data migration, ERP transformation, solution architecture, or closely related experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership of large-scale enterprise migration programs.
  • Experience delivering at least one major SAP S/4HANA migration or transformation through design, build, testing, cutover, go-live, and hypercare.
  • Experience working with a major System Integrator or directly overseeing System Integrator delivery.
  • Experience serving in a client-side advisory, architecture, or technical oversight role.
