Job description

The Healthcare IT Specialist is responsible for the administration, support, maintenance, and optimization of the hospital’s EMR system and related clinical and administrative technology. Working closely with physicians, nurses, clinical staff, and leadership, this position ensures that hospital systems are secure, reliable, and aligned with clinical workflows. The role combines hands-on technical support with EMR system ownership, staff training, and data-security responsibilities, and serves as a key liaison between end users and technology across the organization., EMR / EHR System Administration & Support

  • Serve as the primary system administrator and point of contact for the EPower EMR, supporting physicians, nurses, and clinical and administrative staff (EPower-specific training provided).
  • Build, configure, and maintain EMR user profiles, role-based access levels, templates, and permissions.
  • Identify recurring EMR issues, workflow bottlenecks, and documentation gaps; recommend and implement system or process improvements in collaboration with leadership.
  • Provide second-level clinical application support, partnering with end users to translate clinical and operational needs into effective EMR configuration.
  • Test and support EMR updates, enhancements, and new features prior to deployment.
  • Develop and maintain downtime documentation and recovery procedures to ensure continuity of patient care and data integrity during system outages.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, workflows, and procedures.

Onboarding, User Access & Security

  • Enroll and configure all new employees in the EMR, assigning appropriate access levels and providing system orientation.
  • Set up new employees from day one, including computer configuration, login credentials, email accounts, and system access permissions.
  • Program, activate, and deactivate electronic key fobs and access badges in accordance with staffing changes.
  • Manage user accounts, password resets, and access permissions through Active Directory.
  • Administer endpoint security, antivirus, and data backup and recovery processes across all hospital devices.
  • Ensure all IT systems and activities comply with HIPAA regulations and PHI data-security requirements at all times.

Help Desk & Infrastructure Support

  • Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 help desk and desktop support to all hospital staff.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain hardware, including computers, laptops, monitors, printers, scanners, and peripherals.
  • Support and administer Microsoft 365 / Office 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.
  • Diagnose and resolve network connectivity issues, including LAN/WAN, Wi-Fi, VPN, TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of IT hardware, software licenses, and equipment.
  • Log, track, and document all support requests through a ticketing system from initiation through resolution.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of IT support, help desk, or desktop support experience, including hands-on experience in a healthcare or hospital environment.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting an EHR / EMR system (e.g., EPower, Epic, Cerner, Meditech, eClinicalWorks, or similar)., * Associate’s degree or higher in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Health Information Management, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a hospital, emergency center, or acute care facility.
  • Experience with EMR build, configuration, or optimization beyond end-user support.
  • Familiarity with clinical workflows, medical terminology, and healthcare interoperability.
  • One or more of the following certifications: CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Microsoft 365 Certified (Fundamentals or Associate), Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), ITIL Foundation, or a recognized EHR/EMR certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Windows 10/11, Microsoft 365 / Office 365, and Active Directory.
  • Basic networking knowledge (TCP/IP, LAN/WAN, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Wi-Fi).
  • Experience with a ticketing system such as ServiceNow, Zendesk, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of HIPAA and PHI data-security requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work directly with physicians and nurses and translate their needs into technical solutions.
  • Ability to remain calm, prioritize, and multitask in a fast-paced, 24-hour hospital environment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • On-site position based in Houston, TX.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and working at a computer.
  • Ability to lift and move IT equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • May require occasional after-hours or on-call availability to support a 24-hour facility.
