Job description
We are looking for an experienced IT Systems Engineer to join our team. This position will be responsible for configuring, maintaining and securing the organization’s information systems and data. You will be a part of a growing team and will have the opportunity to experience multiple areas within the security and IT fields.
Specter Aerospace is building the next generation of hypersonic vehicles for defense and commercial applications. Specter is headquartered in Peabody, MA, just north of Boston, where it leverages its advanced propulsion technologies, manufacturing, and testing capabilities to rapidly develop supersonic and hypersonic systems. Funded by a mix of government R&D organizations, commercial customers, and private funding, Specter is a growing aerospace and defense startup. Close relationships with MIT, Notre Dame, AFRL, NRL, ANL, and other research organizations provide access to cutting-edge developments, facilities, and personnel. Specter is expanding its team in preparation for flight testing and full-scale production.
- Operate, maintain, administer, and harden on-premises infrastructure technology to include modern hypervisors and virtual hosts (Nutanix, VMWare, ESXi, etc.)
- Maintain, administer, and harden endpoint operating systems (Windows 10/11, RHEL, Ubuntu) and server operating systems.
- Configure and maintain security-related tools such as intrusion detection/prevention systems, SIEM solutions, and endpoint security solutions.
- Plan, configure, and maintain backup solutions for IT infrastructure
- Monitor for and analyze security events and incidents and respond promptly
- and effectively to security threats and breaches.

Maintain documentation and records related to security audits and inspections, and address findings with recommendations and appropriate corrective actions.
- Support lab activities by working side by side with Engineering staff to plan, configure, and test secure configuration of IT/OT systems within manufacturing and testing equipment in order to integrate them into IT infrastructure
- Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, changes, and issues, and provide regular reports on system status and performance.
- Participate in risk assessments and gap analysis to identify areas for improvement in the organization’s security posture.
- Assist the security team on mission essential tasks.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Information Systems, Information Security, or a related field, or equivalent years of experience
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- US Government Secret Clearance or ability to obtain
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in IT systems engineering, with a focus on systems security and security hardening, preferably working within a classified systems environment.
- Must be able to obtain DoDD 8140 / 8570 Certification requirements (CompTIA Security+ CE or equivalent certification) within 6 months of start date.
- Experience administering Linux operating systems
- Experience working within security regulations and compliance frameworks, such as NIST 800-53 and NIST 800-171.
- Familiarity with security-related technologies such as vulnerability management, SIEM solutions, and endpoint security solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with technical engineering staff.
