Job description

As a Sr. Microwave Hardware Design Engineer, you will engage with an experienced cross-disciplinary team to design innovative product solutions. You will work closely with colleagues throughout Leo’s inter-disciplinary team in order to drive key aspects of product definition, execution and optimization. You must be responsive, flexible and able to succeed within a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

As a member of the team, you will be responsible for designing microwave/RF subsystems for use in space. Must be able to work effectively cross-functionally with multiple disciplines. In this role you will:

  • Decompose system level requirements into realizable hardware requirements.
  • Design and develop a solution that meets these requirements.
  • Design, develop, and optimize a Ka/V band radio hardware for use in space.
  • Simulate and optimize RF circuits, perform schematic capture, and oversee PCB layout.
  • Build up test bench for design verification.
  • Evaluate and optimize design in the lab to demonstrate solution meets all requirements.
  • Work with RF system, power, software, mechanical thermal, reliability and compliance teams to ensure solution integrates with overall platform requirements.

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities

  • Will work cross-functionally on collaboration to fluently engage with diverse engineering disciplines, effectively advocate for RF system requirements, and ensure alignment for overall system success.
  • Design of high-performance Ka-Band and V-band frequency converters, LNAs and SSPAs.
  • Develop Microwave and millimeter wave RF hardware requirements.
  • Works closely with the production test team to define DVT, Qualification and production test requirements
  • Develop, designs, and test of high-power RF/microwave components, subsystems and systems.
  • Derive RF HW specifications for the RF system and RF blocks/circuits
  • Performs root cause analysis on products, technical problems, processes and documentation.
  • Assess feasibility of various designs in support of architectural definition
  • Participate in subsystem design and prototyping, schematic capture, prototype bring-up and debugging, hardware bug tracking, functional verification, and signal characterization
  • Evaluate and characterize new technology, prototypes and RF components
  • Support manufacturing engineers on production testing of RF avionics components and systems
  • Evaluates systems and directs design modifications.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs circuits and fixtures.

Requirements

Experience with RF measurement equipment, including: power meters, spectrum analyzers, vector signal generators, network analyzers, oscilloscopes

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering specializing in RF/Microwave design
  • 7+ years of experience in RF / microwave hardware design to component level, such as power amps, LNAs, mixers, and block down-converters, block up-converters, and etc. for commercial or military communication receivers, transmitters and subsystems up to 50 GHz.
  • In depth knowledge of radio architectures.
  • Experience with RF/ microwave design expertise in Power, Low Noise and Driver Amplifier design for commercial or military communications receivers, transmitters and sub-systems up to 50 GHz.
  • Experience with RF and EM simulation software.
  • Experience with analog, digital and mixed mode circuit design and layout.
  • Excellent math aptitude, written and communication skills., Master’s degree or PhD in electrical engineering and 10 years of industry experience in RF/microwave circuits or communication theory
  • Experience performing analysis and simulation of communication systems including link budgets
  • Thorough understanding of RF passive and active components and circuitry
  • Knowledge of digital communication systems, spread spectrum, forward error correcting codes (FEC), single and multi-carrier techniques, modulation types such as PSK, APSK, QAM, OFDM
  • Understanding of electromagnetic propagation and antenna systems
  • RF/microwave design using ADS, HFSS, AWR Microwave Office
  • Experience with the design and integration of RF systems consisting of radio transmitters and receivers, LNAs, PAs, couplers, filters, etc.
  • Experience with RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers
  • Comfortable communicating deeply technical topics to a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to lead projects across departments, create and maintain project schedules, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Working knowledge of space environments and the process to space qualify a communication flight unit.
