Job description

The Technology Support Specialist I provides entry-level technical support focused on the deployment, repair, maintenance, and lifecycle management of district-issued computing devices. This position primarily supports laptops, Chromebooks, and related peripherals used by students and staff. Responsibilities include hardware repair, device distribution and collection, asset tracking, and maintaining accurate inventory and documentation.

The position performs basic troubleshooting of classroom technology issues and escalates complex technical, infrastructure, and network-related issues to senior technology staff., Device Repair & Hardware Support

  1. Diagnose, repair, and maintain district-issued laptops, Chromebooks, and related peripherals.
  2. Replace damaged components such as screens, keyboards, batteries, trackpads, and charging ports.
  3. Perform preventative maintenance to extend device life and ensure proper functionality.
  4. Test repaired devices to verify operational readiness before returning them to service.
  5. Recover and salvage usable components from damaged or non-repairable devices for reuse when appropriate.
  6. Prepare and configure devices for deployment to staff and students.

Device Deployment & Lifecycle Management

  1. Assist with the distribution, collection, and reassignment of student and staff computing devices.
  2. Support device setup during school year rollouts, new employee onboarding, and device refresh cycles.
  3. Collect and process devices at the end of school terms or when staff or students leave the division.
  4. Assist with the re-imaging, cleaning, and preparation of devices for redeployment.

Inventory & Asset Management

  1. Maintain accurate inventory records for all assigned technology devices including laptops, Chromebooks, and related equipment.
  2. Track device assignments, repairs, and component replacements within the division’s asset management system.
  3. Document all repair activity, service history, and parts usage.
  4. Assist with surplus processing and disposal of end-of-life technology equipment in accordance with division procedures.

Basic Technical Support

  1. Respond to assigned help desk requests related to device issues and basic classroom technology problems.
  2. Provide troubleshooting for common hardware, software, and peripheral issues.
  3. Assist staff with basic device operation and common technical issues.
  4. Escalate complex software, network, or infrastructure issues to appropriate IT staff.

Organizational & Operational Responsibilities

  1. Follow established procedures, repair documentation, and technical manuals when servicing equipment.
  2. Maintain organized work areas and proper handling of technology equipment and parts.
  3. Collaborate with other members of the IT Department to ensure timely resolution of technology issues.
  4. Maintain professional communication with staff and school personnel.
  5. Participate in training and professional development as assigned.
  6. Perform other duties related to technology and data operations as assigned by supervisor.

Student Information Systems and Data Management

  1. Assist the primary administrator for the division’s Student Information System (SIS) and associated software.
  2. Assist in the management of user access and functionality for staff, students, and parent access to the SIS.
  3. Assist in overseeing student data management and ensure accuracy of enrollment, attendance, and academic records.
  4. Assist in the management of user access and functionality for staff, students, and parent access to the SIS.

State and Federal Reporting

  1. Assist in coordinating student data uploads and integration with division software systems.
  2. Assist in calculating and tracking division enrollment and attendance data on a monthly basis.
  3. Assist the primary administrator for the division’s Student Information System (SIS) and associated software.
  4. Perform other duties related to technology and data operations as assigned by the supervisor.

Compliance & Work Expectations

  • Follow all Radford City Public Schools policies and procedures.
  • Comply with all applicable State and Federal laws.
  • Adhere to assigned work schedules.
  • Maintain professionalism in all school and community interactions.
  • Able to lift and maneuver 25 lbs

Requirements

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License and ability to travel between school sites.
  • Ability to pass required background checks.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to follow technical repair procedures and documentation.
  • Basic troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for computing devices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school staff and IT personnel., * Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred:

  • Experience with laptop or Chromebook repair.
  • Experience with inventory or asset management systems.
  • Experience working in K-12 or education technology environments.
