Radio Network Engineer

The Radio Network Engineer performs advanced technical work supporting North Carolina’s statewide radio communications systems used by the Department of Adult Corrections. This role ensures the reliable, secure, and uninterrupted operation of mission-critical radio infrastructure across all correctional facilities. The position involves installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex radio systems, networked communications equipment, towers, and related electronic components. The Engineer evaluates and tests radio equipment across multiple frequency bands (VHF, UHF, 700/800 MHz), conducts component-level diagnostics using specialized equipment, and supports IP-based radio networks (WAN, LAN, wired, wireless, fiber). The role includes remote and onsite technical support, tower climbing for equipment installation and maintenance, and administrative tasks related to inventory, documentation, and asset management., * Install, configure, maintain, and repair statewide radio communication systems, including base stations, repeaters, trunked systems, and networked communications equipment.

• Diagnose and repair radio equipment at the electronic component level using advanced diagnostic tools (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, service monitors, etc.).
• Evaluate, test, and verify new radio models for compatibility, frequency accuracy, and performance within existing systems.
• Perform site surveys for radio towers and equipment installations, including assessing elevation, obstructions, tower readiness, and climbing structures up to 120 feet.
• Install and troubleshoot communication lines, data circuits, switches, and IP-based systems supporting statewide radio networks.
• Interpret technical schematics, trace circuit paths, perform authorized circuit board modifications, and resolve cabling issues from antennas to consoles.

Work Location and Schedule

This position requires the daily commute to the 200 Leagan Dr., Raleigh NC, 27603, NC. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The work schedule is Monday - Friday and may require some weekend work and overnight travel to meet the demands of the organization., The Support Services Division oversees the operations and infrastructure that sustain facilities within the Department of Adult Correction. Responsibilities include facility maintenance, fleet and warehouse management, food services, construction and renovation projects, and energy efficiency. This division plays a vital role in supporting daily operations and long-term planning., Radio Communications Operations The work location also supports Radio Communications operations for NCDAC. This team manages, designs, and services radio communications systems throughout the department, including oversight of approximately 52,000 two-way radios operating on the statewide NXDN Radio System. Support extends to the VIPER network and other public safety communications systems. The Radio Communications team is responsible for system design, engineering, tower construction, maintenance, and ongoing service to ensure reliable statewide communication infrastructure. The radio shop provides routine maintenance and repair of equipment while coordinating and executing major communications projects across the agency.

• Through knowledge of telecommunications network software and hardware and RF systems communications and the full range of network system requirements.
• Demonstrate experience with microwave radio systems and trunked radio systems configuration troubleshooting and support.
• Through knowledge of cabling standards, and DNS/DHCP/SNMP protocols
• Demonstrate experience with configuration of switches, multiplexers, demultiplexers, routers and other network equipment.
• Through knowledge of digital electronics, RF communications system design and integrated circuit component technology.

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or an IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution, Associate degree in computer science, or a related technical field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience, High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of networking related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
