Job description

Optimus is Tesla’s humanoid robot and one of the company’s biggest moonshots to date. The Optimus robot program is where mechanics, electronics, controls, software, and manufacturing meet. As Optimus moves from prototype to production, the ability to diagnose and resolve issues quickly is as important as building new capabilities.

The Diagnostics Engineering team builds the diagnostic and service tools used to troubleshoot and repair Optimus. You’ll work side-by-side with service, manufacturing, firmware, and hardware partners to make the robot understandable, debuggable, and repairable at scale.

This is a hands-on role. Expect time on the robot, tight iteration with technicians and engineers, and ownership of tools that directly affect uptime and production velocity. What You’ll Do

  • Debug Optimus robots alongside service and manufacturing personnel
  • Design and develop diagnostic applications, including 3D visualizations of robot state, joint positions, sensor data, and system health
  • Partner with firmware and hardware engineers to define on-board diagnostics capabilities, telemetry interfaces, and alerting
  • Turn real pain points from engineers and technicians into better tools and workflows
  • Create diagnostic procedures, automated test sequences, and self-check routines that reduce mean time to resolution
  • Analyze field and factory data for recurring failure patterns and drive fixes with hardware and software teams
  • Continuously improve diagnostic and repair tooling based on what you see on the floor

Requirements

  • Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Python, C/C++, and/or embedded systems experience
  • Experience with complex electromechanical systems and knowledge of how sensors, actuators, and controllers interact
  • Strong software fundamentals and system design instincts; you write tools people use under time pressure
  • Clear communication skills and ability to explain complex failures to diverse audiences
  • High agency and curiosity: you dig into how systems work and fail, and drive problems to closure
  • Hands-on experience with robots (industrial, humanoid, academic, or competition and familiarity with robotics protocols (CAN, EtherCAT, Ethernet) preferred
  • Experience building UI/visualization for real-time systems preferred
  • Prior diagnostic, test, or field-support role for a physical product pref
