Job description

Build and maintain Python backend services and APIs, and help train next-generation AI systems by testing models and delivering high-quality, actionable feedback. Your work will influence how models learn, reason, and perform. No prior AI experience is required, domain knowledge and backend expertise matter most. micro1 is an AI data lab that converts real-world subject matter knowledge into training data and evaluations for frontier models, with contributors from finance, healthcare, STEM engineering, and more. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize scalable REST and GraphQL endpoints.
  • Implement and enforce backend data validation, robust error handling, and API security best practices.
  • Plan and execute database migrations, performance tuning, and schema changes as required.
  • Actively test new AI-powered models using Cursor, producing incident reports, bug traces, and annotated screenshots to document issues and behaviors.
  • Take part in focused, 4-day intensive testing bursts to explore how AI models affect real developer workflows.
  • Collaborate with the research team in a dedicated Slack channel to discuss findings and propose improvements.
  • Complete detailed post-burst surveys that summarize model performance, developer experience, and recommended fixes.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience as a backend developer, with strong Python skills.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining RESTful and GraphQL APIs.
  • Advanced knowledge of backend data validation, error handling, and API security.
  • Hands-on experience with database migrations, performance tuning, and schema design.
  • Frequent use of AI coding tools is expected, familiarity with Cursor is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, able to create clear incident and bug reports.
  • Proven ability to perform well in fast-paced, confidential, and collaborative remote environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public contributions to open source projects, such as GitHub activity or notable repositories.
  • Experience designing or evaluating experimental tooling and developer workflows.
  • Demonstrated interest in the role of AI in software development.

Work Terms

  • Engagement type, contract work performed remotely.
  • Participation in scheduled, intensive 4-day testing periods is required when planned.
  • Collaboration will occur primarily via Slack and other remote communication tools.
  • This role is structured as a contracted engagement; candidates must be able to contract for services from their location.

Benefits & conditions

Hourly rate, $50 to $100 per hour. Eligibility Candidates must be able to enter into a contract for remote work from their country of residence. No additional work-authorization details have been provided in the posting.
