Job description

DecisionPoint seeks a Senior API / Integration Engineer to design, build, secure, and optimize enterprise-grade APIs and system integrations supporting applications across a large federal and DoD-aligned mission environment. This senior role enables interoperability across systems, aligns integration patterns with enterprise architecture, and ensures API performance, reliability, and security.

The Senior API / Integration Engineer partners with developers, cloud engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and mission stakeholders to deliver scalable, secure, well-documented APIs and integration services that support MC&FP’s broader application ecosystem and enterprise data flows.

This position is fully remote., The Senior API / Integration Engineer will: Architect, build, and optimize enterprise APIs and backend integration services.

  • Implement secure REST and GraphQL endpoints, schemas, and data contracts.

  • Design integration workflows, service interactions, and middleware/API gateway connections.

  • Ensure APIs comply with DoD cybersecurity policies, Zero Trust principles, and secure coding practices.

  • Build and maintain integration pipelines between internal and external systems.

  • Conduct API performance tuning, scalability improvements, and error-handling enhancements.

  • Troubleshoot complex integration failures, data issues, and cross-system communication gaps.

  • Support API versioning, lifecycle management, and migration planning.

  • Produce API documentation including OpenAPI/Swagger specs, interface definitions, and usage guides.

  • Collaborate with cloud engineering teams to optimize API hosting, routing, and authentication.

  • Conduct peer code reviews, enforce development standards, and mentor junior developers.

  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and support sprint-based delivery.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field.

Experience (Required)

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in API development, backend engineering, or systems integration.

  • Experience designing secure, scalable REST APIs and integration workflows.

  • Experience supporting enterprise systems in federal or DoD environments.

  • Experience troubleshooting complex backend and integration issues.

  • Experience delivering code and system changes in Agile development environments.

Technical Knowledge (Required)

  • Strong proficiency with RESTful API design, JSON standards, and schema modeling.

  • Experience with API gateways, routing layers, and middleware (e.g., Kong, Apigee, AWS API Gateway).

  • Strong understanding of authentication/authorization (OAuth2, SAML, JWT).

  • Knowledge of secure coding practices and DoD cybersecurity requirements.

  • Experience with integration patterns (synchronous/asynchronous, event-driven, message queues).

Technical Knowledge (Preferred)

  • Experience with GraphQL API development.

  • Experience with AWS cloud-native integration services (Lambda, API Gateway, EventBridge).

  • Familiarity with microservices, container orchestration, and service mesh architectures.

Certifications

Required:

  • CompTIA Security+

Preferred:

  • AWS Developer or Architect certification

  • ITIL v4 Foundation

  • Integration or API architecture certifications

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities for complex integration challenges.

  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

  • Ability to architect secure, scalable API solutions aligned with enterprise goals.

  • High attention to detail and strong discipline around versioning and governance.

  • Ability to collaborate across engineering, cloud, and cybersecurity teams.
