Job description
The Building Automation Systems (BAS) Project Engineer in Training executes BAS projects from project turnover through final commissioning and owner training, under the direction and mentorship of a BAS Project Engineer, Project Manager, or the Manager, Building AutomationControls. Working toward the role of BAS Project Engineer, the incumbent develops the technical and project-leadership skills required to lead controls design, submittals, programming, commissioning, and coordination between customers, mechanical contractors, electrical contractors, TAB contractors, commissioning agents, and internal CES personnel. The role is structured to build the judgment, authority, and track record required to advance to BAS Project Engineer, helping to ensure projects are delivered on time and in compliance with project specifications, company standards, and customer expectations., * Own overall project execution and technical delivery on assigned projects, from project turnover through final commissioning and closeout, under the direction of a BAS Project Engineer or Project Manager.
- Own day-to-day project coordination across all stakeholders.
- Own project procurement and material management.
- Run project and customer meetings.
- Support the project budget, schedule, and change-order management under the direction of a BAS Project Engineer or Project Manager, taking on greater ownership as competencies are demonstrated.
- Demonstrate schedule and risk awareness, identifying and escalating impacts promptly.
- Work under the mentorship of a BAS Project Engineer, Project Manager, or the BAS Manager to build project-leadership judgment and progress toward the BAS Project Engineer role.
- Accept and perform other work as assigned.
Project PlanningDesign
- Review project specifications, mechanical drawings, and contract documents.
- Participate in project turnover meetings with sales personnel.
- Develop and maintain project documentation and job files.
- Generate Requests for Information (RFIs) as needed.
- Develop detailed Sequences of Operation based on project specifications and design intent.
- Design BAS control drawings, including control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, controller architecture, and VAV, damper, valve, and airflow-station schedules.
- Create project Bill of Materials (BOM).
- Prepare and submit engineer review packages and respond to review comments.
ProcurementMaterial Management
- Develop equipment and controls shopping lists.
- Coordinate procurement with internal purchasing personnel.
- Verify material deliveries for accuracy and completeness.
- Track material inventory and maintain organized project storage.
- Coordinate panel fabrication and delivery schedules.
Project Coordination
- Attend project meetings and communicate project requirements to all stakeholders.
- Coordinate work with mechanical contractors, electrical contractors, TAB contractors, commissioning agents, owners, and facility personnel.
- Monitor project progress and identify schedule impacts.
- Provide technical support to subcontractors and field personnel.
- Ensure work is completed according to project drawings and company standards.
BAS ProgrammingSystem Development
- Create and configure Niagara stations.
- Commission and license JACE controllers.
- Develop and implement BAS programming and control logic.
- Build controller databases utilizing company naming standards.
- Configure graphics, alarms, trends, and reporting systems.
- Create and configure Web Supervisor systems when required.
- Develop system backups and maintain version control throughout the project lifecycle.
TestingCommissioning
- Perform controller bench testing and validation.
- Verify controller communications and network performance.
- Conduct point-to-point checkout and functional testing.
- Complete commissioning documentation.
- Support TAB activities and system calibration.
- Assist commissioning agents during functional performance testing.
- Troubleshoot and resolve system issues during startup and commissioning.
DocumentationTraining
- Maintain daily backups of stations and controllers.
- Create project graphics and monitoring tools.
- Update and finalize as-built drawings.
- Prepare closeout documentation.
- Conduct owner training sessions on BAS operation and maintenance.
- Ensure all project records are properly archived.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, HVAC, Controls, or Electrical Technology is preferred.
- Entry point to the Project Engineering track, offered selectively - typically reached from BAS Technician III with strong project-leadership aptitude, or laterally from the BAS Specialist track.
- 2 + years of BAS controls experience (guideline), with demonstrated project-leadership aptitude - the entry point to the Project Engineering track., * Strong understanding of HVAC systems and control sequences.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings and specifications.
- Knowledge of BAS networking, controllers, sensors, actuators, and field devices.
- Proficiency with Niagara N4 station architecture, programming, and graphics.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Experience with Distech Controls products and BACnet communication protocols.
- Experience with commissioning and TAB coordination.
- Experience with control panel design and submittal preparation.
- Familiarity with commercial mechanical systems, including AHUs, VAV systems, chillers, boilers, pumping systems, and energy-metering systems.
Licenses/Certifications
- Niagara N4 Advanced certification is required or in progress; project-management and commissioning training is expected as the incumbent progresses on the Project Engineering track.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License is required.
- Incumbent must be insurable at all times by CES insurance carrier.
- Must be able to pass in-depth government background checks.
