Job description

This role sits at the boundary between IT and OT and needs genuine depth on both sides. The bulk of the work is IT infrastructure delivery carried out on the plant floor, namely networking, server and virtualisation, migration and cybersecurity, applied to the systems that run a regulated manufacturing site. It is not a controls or PLC programming position. What sets it apart from a standard IT infrastructure role is that the assets being migrated are live manufacturing systems, so the successful candidate must understand how a production environment operates and be able to hand equipment back to production without disruption. Working as part of a high-profile separation project, you will take ownership of the infrastructure workstream, supporting the migration of manufacturing systems and assets from legacy corporate infrastructure onto a new standalone network. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong expertise across IT and industrial networking, server and virtualisation infrastructure, cybersecurity, and regulated production environments., * Assess and document the site’s IT and OT environment, creating detailed inventories of manufacturing assets, network architecture, server infrastructure and system dependencies.

  • Plan and execute the migration of manufacturing equipment and supporting systems from legacy corporate infrastructure onto a new network, including IP re-addressing, DNS, DHCP, VLAN and connectivity changes.
  • Design, configure and validate physical and logical network connectivity for manufacturing assets, working closely with site IT teams and infrastructure vendors.
  • Administer and migrate the server infrastructure that underpins manufacturing, including virtualised workloads on VMware and vSphere, along with the associated virtual networking, host and cluster configuration.
  • Manage backup, replication and recovery of manufacturing systems using tooling such as Acronis, ensuring recoverable images exist before any migration or remediation activity and that recovery has been tested.
  • Maintain and restore software artifacts and deployment packages from repositories such as JFrog Artifactory, ensuring the correct application versions, dependencies and licences are reinstated on rebuilt systems.
  • Perform remediation activities on industrial equipment including operating system upgrades, patching, endpoint protection, industrial PC rebuilds, software restoration and system recovery.
  • Support the rebuild and recovery of automation assets following a change or migration, including reloading robot programs and controller EEPROM images, restoring machine parameters and configuration, and verifying correct operation before handback.
  • Support cybersecurity initiatives across the separation through network segmentation, system hardening, asset classification and implementation of security best practices aligned to recognised industry standards.
  • Coordinate work around production schedules, planned shutdowns and maintenance windows to minimise operational disruption while ensuring successful project delivery.
  • Support change control, computer system validation (CSV), qualification activities and production handover documentation within an FDA regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Track project progress, provide accurate status reporting, identify technical risks, and work closely with programme stakeholders to ensure milestones and cutover activities are delivered successfully.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong IT infrastructure and networking background, including switching, routing, VLANs, subnetting, DNS, DHCP, NAT and network troubleshooting.
  • Experience administering server and virtualisation environments, particularly VMware and vSphere, including virtual machine management, virtual networking, and the migration of workloads during a network or domain change.
  • Experience delivering infrastructure migrations, network re-addressing projects, or system separation initiatives, ideally within live production or manufacturing environments.
  • Proven experience working in or directly supporting an OT or manufacturing environment, with a solid understanding of how a production plant operates and what it takes to work on equipment without disrupting output.
  • Hands-on experience supporting manufacturing technologies such as industrial PCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, vision systems, robotics or automated production equipment. Deep PLC programming is not required, but the candidate must be comfortable working around this equipment.
  • Good understanding of cybersecurity principles including segmentation, system hardening, patch management and endpoint protection, ideally with exposure to OT security frameworks such as IEC 62443 or NIST.
  • Experience with backup and recovery tooling such as Acronis, including imaging, restoration and recovery testing of industrial PCs and servers.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently, prioritise competing activities and deliver projects with minimal supervision.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with Computer System Validation (CSV), change control, qualification activities and regulatory requirements within FDA or other GxP regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience supporting the critical server systems that sit behind a production line, including SCADA and HMI servers, historians, MES application and database servers, licence servers and file shares, and an understanding of the dependencies between them.
  • Practical experience working with industrial robots, including loading and recovering robot programs and controller EEPROM images following equipment rebuilds or replacements.
  • Familiarity with software artifact repositories such as JFrog Artifactory for storing, versioning and restoring application software and deployment packages.
