Job description

The Tank Line Chemistry Technician will perform routine and specialized chemical testing, sampling, tracking, and day-to-day maintenance of tank lines, storage tanks, fluid treatment systems, and lab instrumentation. The role supports quality control and production by ensuring fluids (coatings, solvents, process chemistries, primers, paints, adhesives, sealants, cleaning solutions) meet specifications and that tank systems operate safely and reliably. Responsibilities

  • Collect representative samples from tank lines, storage tanks, mixing vessels, and process points per established sampling plans and safety procedures.
  • Perform routine chemical and physical tests in the lab/field: specific gravity, viscosity, solids content, pH, %volatiles, flash point, density, conductivity, FTIR swabs, titrations, refractometry, and basic wet-chemistry procedures.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain tank line equipment and lab instruments: viscometer, density meter, pH meters, scales, pipettes, FTIR/IR spectrometer (or coordinate calibration), temperature sensors, pumps, filters, and dispensing equipment.
  • Monitor tank levels, inventory, and batching operations; document receipts, transfers, and disposals through LIMS/ERP/Inventory systems.
  • Prepare and mix small-batch formulations and dilutions per recipes and work instructions; support production batching under supervision.
  • Conduct routine visual and simple microscopic inspections for contamination, phase separation, particulate presence, and color/appearance checks.
  • Maintain sample chain-of-custody and accurate test records; enter test data into LIMS/PLM and generate routine QC reports.
  • Support corrective actions for off-spec materials: quarantine, rework/dilution, blending, or disposal per procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform preventative maintenance (PM) on tank line components: filters, seals, pumps, sensors; report larger maintenance/repair needs.
  • Follow safety, environmental, and waste-handling procedures (PPE, spill response, SDS use, hazardous waste manifests).
  • Participate in root-cause investigations by providing sampling data, test results, and field observations.

Requirements

  • Associate degree and typically 3 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Typically 1-3 years experience in chemical handling, coatings/fluids operations, industrial chemistry, paint/tank line operations, or laboratory support roles.
  • Basic laboratory skills (measuring, titration, sample handling) and familiarity with safe handling of chemicals.

Technical Skills:

  • Competence with routine QC instruments: viscometer, pH meter, density meter, refractometer, glossmeter (if applicable).
  • Ability to follow SOPs, recipes, and work instructions; strong attention to detail for sampling and test reproducibility.
  • Basic data entry skills in LIMS/Excel and ability to interpret test acceptance criteria.
  • Familiarity with basic preventive maintenance and fault identification on pumps/valves/filters
