Job description

We’re looking for an experienced engineer to join a collaborative technology team delivering mission-critical software used within a large scale UK defence programme. This is an opportunity to take ownership of major Back End initiatives, influence technical direction, and work on systems where performance, reliability and security genuinely matter. The Opportunity

You’ll be helping to shape architecture, solve integration challenges and design scalable Back End solutions that connect multiple enterprise platforms.

Working as part of an experienced engineering team, you’ll play a key role in evolving a modern software platform, integrating with data platforms, ERP systems and partner technologies while helping establish engineering best practices across the wider team.

You’ll have the autonomy to make technical decisions, mentor fellow engineers and contribute to the long term direction of both the product and engineering function. What You’ll Be Doing

  • Designing and developing scalable Back End services and APIs
  • Building integrations with enterprise systems, data platforms and third-party applications
  • Making architectural decisions around Back End services and data flows
  • Implementing event-driven and Real Time integration patterns where appropriate
  • Writing clean, maintainable, well-tested code using modern engineering practices
  • Improving CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and platform observability
  • Working closely with engineers, product specialists, project managers and customer stakeholders
  • Mentoring developers and helping raise engineering standards across the team

Requirements

You’ll ideally have experience in:

  • Strong Back End development experience using Java (or another modern Back End language with the ability to transition)
  • Designing RESTful APIs and distributed Back End systems
  • SQL databases and data modelling
  • System integration and enterprise application development
  • Event-driven architectures and messaging technologies
  • CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and modern development practices
  • Making sound technical decisions and working through ambiguous requirements
  • Mentoring engineers and leading technical delivery

You’ll be someone who enjoys solving difficult engineering problems, communicates well with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and takes pride in delivering high-quality software. Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be UK Nationals and eligible to obtain Security Clearance (SC). Existing SC clearance is advantageous but not essential.
