Job description
The Cheshire West and Chester Council Digital, Data and Technology (DDAT) department has recently undergone a huge transformation and is looking for an Infrastructure Engineer to ensure the reliability, security, and optimal performance of the Council’s cloud-based systems-including voice, data, video, and wireless services hosted on cloud platforms. This role spans the planning, design, deployment, and ongoing management of cloud infrastructure, supporting connectivity across local and wide areas within the organisation., * Lead the design, delivery and ongoing management of the Council’s network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN and wireless services, ensuring it meets current and future needs.
- Monitor performance, maintain security and resolve issues across the network, including management of firewalls, VPNs and core infrastructure (routers, switches and related components).
- Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance and continuous improvement of network systems, including upgrades, expansions and adoption of new technologies.
- Work collaboratively to develop and implement network policies, ensure regulatory compliance, and support disaster recovery to maintain service continuity.
- Provide technical leadership and support to IT teams, including mentoring junior staff and resolving complex network issues.
- Maintain accurate and up to date network documentation, and stay informed on emerging technologies and best practice to enhance service delivery.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, along with a solid understanding of network technologies and environments. You will bring experience of system monitoring, configuration and troubleshooting, supported by strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to resolving technical issues. Knowledge of network platforms such as Cisco, Juniper or similar is important, alongside a sound understanding of core network security principles, including access controls and threat monitoring. Relevant certifications, such as CompTIA Network+, and exposure to a range of network technologies are desirable.
You will be an effective communicator, able to provide clear technical support to colleagues and end users, and comfortable working collaboratively as part of a wider team. Organised and detail-oriented, you will maintain accurate records of network configurations and changes, while contributing to projects and continuous service improvement. A proactive, self-motivated approach is essential, with the confidence to work independently in a fast-paced environment and the curiosity to keep developing your skills, particularly in emerging areas such as cloud technologies.
