Job description

As a test development senior staff engineer in the Operations business group, you will test features on the silicon semiconductor chips Marvell produces for internal and external customers. You will make sure we don’t ship out any underperforming units. You’ll work closely with design to make sure their chip features are testable and that the results meet the customer’s specifications. You may even have to write new code or develop new testing strategies when our chips outpace the capabilities of current testing equipment., * Test Architecture & Strategy: Define the overall test strategy, roadmap, and architecture for wafer-level and die-level/module-level testing of silicon photonics devices.

  • Automated Test Infrastructure: Design, build, and optimize fully automated, high-throughput optical test beds integrating precision alignment systems, tunable lasers, optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs), and high-speed RF instrumentation.
  • Design for Test (DFT): Collaborate closely with the SiPh Design and Layout teams to implement robust DFT and DFM (Design for Manufacturing) features, ensuring early-stage designs are optimized for scalable automated testing.
  • Characterization & Validation: Lead the electro-optic characterization of active and passive components, including insertion loss, polarization dependence (PDL), responsivity, high-bandwidth RF parameters ($S$-parameters), eye diagrams, and Bit Error Rate (BER).
  • Data Analysis & Yield Optimization: Develop advanced data analysis pipelines to parse large volumes of test data. Utilize statistical process control (SPC) to identify yield detractors, root-cause failures, and drive continuous improvement in chip performance and manufacturing yield.
  • Vendor & Ecosystem Management: Partner with external OSATs, foundry partners, and test equipment vendors to co-develop customized optical probers, instrumentation, and production-line test setups., To support fair and authentic hiring practices, candidates are not permitted to use AI tools (such as transcription apps, real-time answer generators like ChatGPT or Copilot, or automated note-taking bots) during interviews.

These tools must not be used to record, assist with, or enhance responses in any way. Our interviews are designed to evaluate your individual experience, thought process, and communication skills in real time. Use of AI tools without prior instruction from the interviewer will result in disqualification from the hiring process.

This position may require access to technology and/or software subject to U.S. export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). As such, applicants must be eligible to access export-controlled information as defined under applicable law. Marvell may be required to obtain export licensing approval from the U.S. Department of Commerce and/or the U.S. Department of State. Except for U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), all applicants may be subject to an export license review process prior to employment.

Requirements

  • Education: Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: 8+ years of hands-on experience in silicon photonics design, characterization, or production testing.
  • Core Photonics Expertise: Deep theoretical and practical knowledge of integrated optics, including waveguiding principles, grating couplers, edge couplers, microring resonators, Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs), and APDs/PIN photodetectors.
  • Automation & Software: Proficient in developing complex, robust automation frameworks using Python, LabVIEW, or C/C++ for instrument control, hardware synchronization, and data acquisition.
  • Instrumentation Mastery: Extensive experience with high-speed optical and RF test equipment, including LCA (Lightwave Component Analyzers), sampling oscilloscopes, optical switches, and sub-micron precision alignment stages
  • Data Analytics: Strong statistical skills with experience using data analysis tools (e.g., JMP, MATLAB, Pandas/NumPy, or SQL) to handle large-scale wafer/die test datasets., Marvell is committed to providing exceptional, comprehensive benefits that support our employees at every stage - from internship to retirement and through life’s most important moments. Our offerings are built around four key pillars: financial well-being, family support, mental and physical health, and recognition. Highlights include an employee stock purchase plan with a 2-year look back, family support programs to help balance work and home life, robust mental health resources to prioritize emotional well-being, and a recognition and service awards to celebrate contributions and milestones. We look forward to sharing more with you during the interview process.

Benefits & conditions

The successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location and market conditions. The expected base pay range for this role may be modified based on market conditions.
