Job description

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Python Software Engineer with a strong background in cloud platforms and platform engineering to join a nationally critical programme supporting the UK’s healthcare infrastructure.

You’ll be working on a highly available, secure healthcare integration and messaging platform that forms part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure (CNI). The platform enables the secure exchange of patient and workforce data between healthcare organisations and digital services, helping ensure vital healthcare systems remain resilient, secure and available.

This is an opportunity to work on software that has a genuine impact on millions of people while helping shape engineering standards across a modern cloud-native platform. What You’ll Be Doing

As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll combine application development with platform engineering practices to build, improve and support a secure, cloud-native environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing high-quality, secure Python applications for complex distributed systems
  • Maintaining and improving code quality across the platform
  • Building, managing and monitoring CI/CD pipelines and code quality gates
  • Ensuring deployments meet technical, security and governance standards
  • Provisioning and supporting cloud-native infrastructure, primarily within AWS
  • Collaborating with product teams to help build observable, reliable cloud-native services
  • Supporting incident investigation and driving continuous platform improvements
  • Embedding Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC) principles throughout the development process
  • Championing a “shift-left” approach to security through static and dynamic analysis, automation and best practice

Essential Skills & Experience

We’re looking for engineers with experience in:

  • Senior-level Python software development
  • Developing secure software for complex systems
  • AWS or other public cloud platforms
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)
  • CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions (or similar)
  • Observability and monitoring tools
  • Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC) principles
  • Supporting production environments and incident investigation
  • Building secure, reliable and scalable cloud-native applications

Requirements

  • Promoting engineering and platform best practices across teams
  • Building reusable Infrastructure as Code modules and CI/CD pipelines
  • Enabling developer productivity through platform engineering
  • Driving DevOps culture and automation
  • Creating shared tooling and self-service capabilities for engineering teams
