Job description

As part of our current high-growth phase, we are creating our Research and Technology (R&T) team and are looking for a Principal Technical Specialist - Electromagnetics to join us.

The R&T team is responsible for the development of new systems, electric machines and power control electronics in support of new and existing customers. This includes electric propulsion systems, electrical generation systems and power management systems for all-electric and hybrid-electric aircraft.

As the Principal Technical Specialist - Electromagnetics, you will advance the Evolito machine 3D electromagnetic FEA simulation in Simulia (Opera) or other, and improve accuracy and computational efficiency of motor modelling in MATLAB and Simulink. You will also focus on implementing new features and streamlining processes, while working closely with project teams on magnetic design, modelling, optimisation and system thermal simulation for a range of applications and products.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Advance and maintain 3D electromagnetic FEA simulation codebase, adding new features and improving computational efficiency with focus on agility and process robustness
  • Develop and refine existing models for nonlinear magnetic behaviour, motion coupling, and high-frequency effects in Evolito machine driving improvements in accuracy and capability
  • Contribute to documentation of the internal simulation workflow, code, method and design
  • Contribute to electromagnetic design using a range of analytical and simulation techniques
  • Perform trade-offs across different simulation tools
  • Support with thermal and system performance simulation in MATLAB and Simulink
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders across the business to ensure alignment on the design intent and process, providing a robust design suitable for high volume manufacture
  • Research new material and technologies for electric machine.

Requirements

  • Previous proven experience working on electric machine design of any type: PMSM, switch reluctance, etc.
  • Proven expertise in 3D magnetic FEA theory and application, using tools such as Simulia (Opera), CST, ANSYS Maxwell, JMAG, or other
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic theory in application to electrical machines
  • Understanding of loss analysis and modelling in electric motors
  • Proficiency in CAD integration and parametric modelling
  • Familiarity with scripting and automation in magnetic FEA simulation setting
  • Good Python and/or MATLAB literacy
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to propose solutions to new challenges
  • A curious approach to problem solving
  • A flexible approach to work.
