Describe your experience administering Windows Server and/or Linux systems in an enterprise environment. What was the scale of the environment and what were your specific responsibilities?

  1. Describe your experience with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) or virtualization technologies (VMware/Hyper-V). What did you deploy or manage and what challenges did you encounter?

  2. Describe a critical systems failure or performance issue you diagnosed and resolved. Walk through your root cause analysis process and how you prevent recurrence.

  3. Describe your experience managing patch cycles and security compliance across enterprise systems. What tools did you use and how did you handle systems that could not be taken offline?

Requirements

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid telework option, in accordance with CAL FIRE’s telework policy, and will be required to report to the office as needed/required. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

  • Incumbents must be able to transport, lift, move, or carry up to 25lbs of various types of equipment to perform duties listed in the essential functions. This position supports a statewide public safety technology environment and requires the ability to coordinate work across multiple programs, platforms, services, and technical teams. The incumbent must be able to exercise sound judgment, communicate effectively, manage competing priorities, and make operational decisions appropriate for a mission-driven technology environment. The incumbent must have strong knowledge of digital service delivery, service ownership, user-centered design, accessibility, business analysis, platform governance, data-informed decision-making, and technology operations. The incumbent must be able to lead staff, coordinate with executive and program stakeholders, evaluate service impacts, manage risk, and ensure solutions are secure, accessible, supportable, and aligned with enterprise standards. Statewide travel may be required up to 5% and may include overnight stays. The position may require work outside normal business hours to support urgent service issues, emergency operations, major releases, executive requests, or mission-critical technology needs., In addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Experience designing, administering, or troubleshooting enterprise server, virtualization, storage, backup, identity, endpoint-management, or cloud-connected infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of Windows Server, Linux, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365 services, virtualization platforms, scripting/automation, monitoring, patching, and configuration management.
  • Experience with system hardening, vulnerability remediation, access control, logging, disaster recovery, backup validation, and operational resilience.
  • Experience resolving complex production incidents involving servers, authentication, applications, databases, storage, backup, certificates, or dependent infrastructure services.
  • Experience with change management, release planning, implementation plans, rollback plans, maintenance windows, system diagrams, and operational documentation.
  • Experience coordinating with security, network, service desk, application development, vendors, and program areas in a statewide or mission-critical environment is desirable.
