(Casual Hire) Scientific Support and Coordination Officer

The Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS), within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) at the University of Hawai?i at Manoa, seeks a motivated Scientific Support and Coordination Officer to support the Genome on the Go! mobile genomics and agricultural biosecurity training initiative. Genome on the Go! is a nationally expanding workforce development and research training platform supported by USDA NextGEN PaCON, NIH-supported genomics initiatives, and partner institutions across Hawai?i, the Pacific Islands, and the continental United States. The program delivers hands-on training in portable genomics, DNA sequencing, molecular diagnostics, bioinformatics, and agricultural biosecurity using mobile laboratory systems. The successful candidate will assist with workshop coordination, laboratory setup, scientific instruction, participant support, logistics, biosafety implementation, documentation, and workforce development activities involving faculty, graduate mentors, undergraduate trainees, industry collaborators, and partner institutions., * Provide scientific, technical, logistical, and administrative support for genomics and biosecurity training workshops.

• Assist with setup, transport, operation, and maintenance of portable molecular biology and sequencing equipment.

• Support hands-on instruction involving DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing workflows, microbial diagnostics, and bioinformatics.

• Coordinate participant onboarding, scheduling, travel logistics, communications, documentation, and training records.

• Prepare laboratory consumables, reagents, instructional materials, and instrumentation.
• Assist faculty and graduate instructors during laboratory and field-based educational activities.

• Support biosafety, laboratory safety, biosecurity, and research compliance procedures.

• Contribute to outreach, recruitment, professional development, reporting, and workforce training initiatives.

• Perform related duties supporting mobile genomics, agricultural diagnostics, and biotechnology workforce development.

• Other duties as assigned.

Do you have experience in Writing skills?, Do you have a Bachelor’s degree?, * Possession of a baccalaureate degree agriculture, biotechnology, molecular biosciences, microbiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biological sciences, or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for laboratory operations or research support; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

• Functional knowledge of molecular biology, genomics, biotechnology, laboratory operations, or research support.
• Functional working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of laboratory operations or research support as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
• Functional working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with laboratory operations or research support.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software (such as Microsoft Office), and proficient in utilizing advanced computer software (such as Google Workspace) and digital tools for comprehensive word processing, data management, email communication, and online research., * Experience in laboratory instruction, workshop facilitation, or scientific research.
• Experience with DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing, microbial culture, or genomic analysis.
• Familiarity with portable sequencing technologies and mobile laboratory systems.
• Experience supporting undergraduate or graduate student training.
• Familiarity with biosafety, agricultural biosecurity, or research compliance.

Interest in biotechnology workforce development and translational research.

Other Conditions: Appointment period June 1, 2026 through August 20, 2026. This position is subject to availability of funding and renewal is contingent upon satisfactory performance, staffing requirements, and/or availability of funding.
