Job description

  • Designing, building, and delivering reliable, scalable, and maintainable backend services and APIs
  • Developing and enhancing microservices that support customer onboarding journeys and customer data processes
  • Continuously improving the development lifecycle through unit testing, code reviews, static code analysis, CI/CD automation, and performance monitoring
  • Proactively maintaining and optimizing existing applications by identifying bottlenecks, reproducing issues, and implementing sustainable solutions
  • Collaborating closely with frontend engineers, architects, analysts, and DevOps engineers to deliver end-to-end solutions

As a Backend Java Engineer within the Financial Crime Prevention (FCP) area, part of the Customer Data & Onboarding (CD&O) domain, you will design, build, and maintain systems that support customer due diligence, regulatory compliance, onboarding, and customer lifecycle management. These applications play a critical role in protecting the bank against financial crime risks while enabling customers to start and maintain their relationship with ING.

You will work closely with business, operations, architects, and engineers across local and global teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and secure solutions that support key banking processes.

In the coming years, the area will continue to invest in digitalization, automation, AI-enabled capabilities, and the modernization of backend platforms and integrations.

The area consists of more than 120 engineers located in Brussels, India, and Manila.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in backend software development
  • Strong knowledge of Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices
  • Good understanding of software architecture, integration patterns, and distributed systems
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
  • Familiarity with common development tools: Backend: Java, Spring Boot, Maven, Git, IntelliJ, Postman/Bruno CI/CD & Operations: Azure DevOps, Ansible, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker
  • Applying software craftsmanship principles by writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code
  • Communicating clearly and proactively in English, sharing ideas and constructive feedback

AI knowledge

  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, or similar solutions
  • Interest in Generative AI and Agentic AI concepts
  • Understanding of AI integration patterns and how AI capabilities can be embedded into enterprise applications
  • Curiosity to explore AI-driven automation and intelligent workflows
  • Enthusiasm for leveraging AI to improve engineering productivity, software quality, and customer processes
