Senior Java Backend Engineer |Big Data & AWS...

Seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer with expertise in Big Data technologies (Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Presto) and AWS cloud services. This role will design and build scalable backend applications, microservices, and data platforms processing billions of financial market events daily. Strong Java development, distributed systems, and cloud experience are required.

Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support highly scalable Java-based backend applications and microservices

• Build and optimize distributed systems that process and analyze billions of daily market events

• Develop solutions utilizing Big Data technologies including Hadoop, Spark, Hive, and Presto

• Architect and implement high-performance APIs that enable fast, reliable access to large-scale datasets

• Design scalable data processing and ingestion frameworks on AWS cloud infrastructure

• Partner with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and deliver scalable technical solutions

• Improve application performance, reliability, observability, and scalability across distributed environments

• Drive engineering best practices, code quality, testing standards, and architectural consistency

• Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity while maintaining rigorous engineering standards

• Stay current with emerging technologies and contribute to technical innovation within the organization

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related technical field

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience

• 5+ years of hands-on Java backend development experience

• Strong experience building distributed microservices architectures

• Deep understanding of RESTful API design, scalable backend systems, and distributed computing

• Experience writing and optimizing complex SQL queries

Big Data Experience

• 3+ years of hands-on experience with Big Data technologies

• Strong experience with Hadoop, Spark, Hive, and/or Presto

• Experience building and supporting large-scale data platforms and data-intensive applications

• Knowledge of distributed data processing and performance optimization

AWS & DevOps

• Proven experience with AWS services including EMR, Hive/Presto, ECS, Lambda, and S3

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices using Jenkins, CloudFormation, or similar tools

• Working knowledge of Python or Unix Shell scripting

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

• Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities

• Ability to influence technical direction and drive engineering best practices

• Experience using AI-powered coding tools with a disciplined approach to validating output

Candidate Must-Haves:

• Strong Java backend development experience

• Big Data expertise with Spark, Hadoop, Hive, or Presto

• Experience building scalable microservices and distributed systems

• AWS cloud experience

• REST API development

• Strong SQL skills

• Experience working with large-scale data platforms

• Ability to attend an onsite interview

• Ability to work onsite 3 days per week in either Rockville, MD or Tysons Corner, VA

• Work on a greenfield platform supporting U.S. financial market integrity

• Build solutions leveraging one of the largest financial regulatory datasets in the cloud

• Process billions of market events daily using modern Big Data technologies
