As Britain’s national gas network, we help keep the lights on, businesses running, and homes warm by maintaining the critical infrastructure that transports gas across Great Britain. While providing the energy security Britain relies on today, we’re also helping transform the network for a clean energy future., As a Network Access Engineer, you’ll play a key technical role in planning and optimising access to the National Transmission System (NTS) for maintenance and capital projects, ensuring the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the gas network.
This role sits at the heart of Operational Delivery, where you’ll provide specialist engineering expertise to support outage planning, risk assessment and network optimisation activities across the National Transmission System.
You’ll help ensure maintenance and investment work can be delivered safely while protecting security of supply, minimising customer impacts and maintaining compliance with gas safety legislation, regulatory obligations and National Gas standards. Working with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, you’ll influence critical operational decisions that support the reliability and future resilience of Britain’s gas network.
What you’ll be doing:

Developing and optimising network access plans over a five-year period for maintenance and capital programmes across the National Transmission System.

Assessing operational, commercial and system risks associated with maintenance and outage activities, identifying mitigations where required.

Providing technical advice on network capability, system constraints, outage feasibility and operational impacts.

Collaborating with Operations, Asset Management, Delivery, Portfolio Planning and Network Control teams to coordinate network access activities.

Supporting within-year changes to outage plans and analysing the impacts of emerging operational requirements.

Communicating network access plans to customers and stakeholders in line with licence, UNC and REMIT obligations.

Driving continuous improvement in outage planning processes, tools and methodologies to support operational excellence.
Requirements

Degree-level qualification in an engineering, technical or numerate discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Strong understanding of National Transmission System operations, plant and equipment, and network operability.

Knowledge of gas safety legislation and relevant Safety Case requirements.

Experience of operational planning, outage management or decision-making within a safety-critical environment.

Ability to analyse complex technical risks, operational constraints and system impacts, developing effective mitigation strategies.

Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience working across operational, engineering and customer-facing teams.

Ability to make sound technical judgements, work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable:
-
Engineering Council accreditation (EngTech, IEng or equivalent).

Knowledge of commercial and incentive frameworks relevant to network access planning.

Experience of network analysis, operational modelling or system capability assessment.

Experience working within the gas transmission or wider energy industry.

Understanding of licence, REMIT and Uniform Network Code (UNC) obligations., This role is subject to National Security Vetting (NSV).
