Job description
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented GIS Technician to join our team! In this role, you’ll create and maintain high-quality mapping products using both traditional drafting techniques and advanced Geographic Information System (GIS) software. You’ll play a key role in developing, updating, and managing GIS databases while supporting projects that help drive informed decision-making. - Design and produce high-quality maps and cartographic products for presentations, publications, and a variety of County initiatives using modern GIS and cartographic techniques.
- Assist with the maintenance, accuracy, and integrity of the County’s GIS database using the ESRI GIS software suite.
- Collect, transfer, and process GPS field data to support mapping and GIS projects.
- Maintain and update the County’s Emergency 911 addressing system to ensure accurate location information.
- Interpret engineering plans, plats, and other technical documents to support GIS data updates and mapping projects.
- Conduct field verification to investigate mapping discrepancies and validate GIS data.
- Collaborate with internal departments, property owners, contractors, and other stakeholders to resolve GIS-related issues.
- Support the GIS Manager with investigations and resolution of Chapter 56 Code violations.
- Partner with the GIS team to develop, maintain, and improve GIS procedures, metadata, and technical documentation.
- Stay current with emerging GIS technology, industry trends, and best practices through training, conferences, and professional development.
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of GIS-related computers, servers, printers, and software.
- Contribute to special projects and perform other duties as assigned to support the County’s GIS operations.
Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in geography, GIS, computer science, or a related field.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), mapping, or related geospatial technologies.
- Experience in general GIS operations and a working knowledge of ESRI suite of GIS software, GPS technology, current version of Microsoft Windows, and database software.
- Capable of performing basic software and hardware installations and configuration.
- Geographic Information Systems Professional and Environmental Systems Research Institute Technical certifications are desired.
Supplemental Information
Physical Demands: This position requires moderate physical activity, including walking, standing, sitting for extended periods, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and repetitive hand movements. The ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, communicate effectively, and use standard office equipment is required. Work is performed primarily in an office environment with occasional fieldwork and exposure to typical office noise levels.
