Job description

We are hiring an App Developer to help build the Military Benefits App - a mobile app that helps service members, veterans, and their families find the discounts, VA programs, and benefits they’ve earned. This is a full-time, role based in Austin TX with 5 days per week in office. You will work across our native iOS and Android apps and the shared backend that powers them, on a small team where features you build reach real users within weeks. We are open on experience level we care more about what you have shipped than how many years you have been doing it., * Build and maintain features in our iOS app (Swift) and Android app (Kotlin), from initial requirements through release.

  • Develop and maintain the shared backend API that serves both mobile clients - endpoints, data models, and performance.
  • Build and maintain our React web and admin interfaces.
  • Deploy and manage services on DigitalOcean, including monitoring, environment setup, and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Manage releases end to end, including App Store and Google Play submissions and review requirements.
  • Ensure the apps stay fast and stable across a wide range of devices, including the older phones many of our users actually carry.
  • Use Git for version control and participate in code review, testing, and debugging to keep quality high.
  • Help decide what gets built next bring questions and opinions, not just completed tickets.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to ship. A published app, a live site, or a personal project with real users counts as much as formal work history.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of Swift, Kotlin, or React, with the willingness and ability to pick up the others on the job.
  • Understanding of RESTful API design and how mobile clients consume backend services.
  • Comfort with Git and a normal build, test, and deploy workflow.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and writing efficient queries.
  • Awareness of basic application security practices authentication, protecting user data, and avoiding common vulnerabilities.
  • Ability to take a loosely defined request and come back with clarifying questions and a plan.

Nice to have, but not required: experience with both native mobile platforms, hands-on time with DigitalOcean or similar cloud hosting, App Store and Play Store release experience, and any personal connection to the military community.
