Knowledge Modeler / Ontologist Manager

Experteer Overview As a Knowledge Modeler/Ontologist, you design and govern domain ontologies for enterprise knowledge graphs, aligning business goals with semantic models. You will bridge business stakeholders, data engineering, and AI/ML teams to translate domains into reusable, standards-based structures. You’ll lead ontology lifecycle, from requirements to deployment, and mentor SMEs in validating competency questions. This hybrid role offers interaction with cross-functional teams and travel to client sites. Compensation / Benefits * Lead ontology lifecycle: requirements, conceptual modeling, formal specification (OWL 2, RDFS, SKOS), validation and deployment * Design T-Box schemas and contribute to A-Box hydration across structured and unstructured data * Maintain naming conventions, URI strategies, and modular ontology architecture * Apply advanced modeling patterns (reification, n-ary relations, punning) with senior guidance * Create and evolve ontologies, taxonomies, and vocabularies using OWL, RDF, RDFS, SKOS * Map relational structures to semantic models and build knowledge graphs for reasoning and analytics * Ensure alignment with business goals, governance, and regulatory requirements * Coach SMEs and stakeholders in competency questions to guide ontology scope * Maintain awareness of upper ontologies (e.g., BFO, schema.org) and alignment patterns * Facilitate SME workshops to elicit domain concepts and validate ontology scope * Translate business language into machine-readable semantics for non-technical audiences * Support feedback loops between business validation and ontology iteration * Apply ontology governance standards: version control, change management, quality gates (W3C, SHACL/ShEx) * Define Definition of Done for ontology deliverables with senior team * Apply R2RML/RML mapping for structured data integration * Collaborate with NLP teams on ontology-guided information extraction * Collaborate with knowledge graph hydration, testing, and validation against competency questions * Work within cross-functional delivery teams across Data Eng, AI/ML, Product, and SMEs * Mentor junior team members and contribute to roadmap planning * Provide accurate estimates for ontology work and ensure delivery timelines Tasks * 5+ years in ontology engineering or semantic web disciplines * 5+ years delivering domain ontologies in enterprise/consulting contexts * Bachelor’s in Information Science, Computer Science, Library Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, or related field Key requirements * medical, dental, vision, life insurance * long-term disability coverage * 401(k) plan * bonus opportunities * paid holidays * paid time off
