Job description

Auria is seeking a Mid-Level UI/UX Designer to lead UI/UX design for a ground system software program supporting a satellite communications customer. Working under the supervision of the Program Manager and alongside systems and software engineers, this role owns the conceptualization and design of operator-facing interfaces across multiple subsystems - including an offline operator training simulator deliverable. This role is a strong fit for a designer who wants deep ownership of mission-critical, real-time satellite operations interfaces.. This role can be remote or hybrid in Bethesda, MD. WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO:

  • Translate subsystem concepts into UI architectures, sketches, storyboards, wireframes, and mockups that lead to intuitive operator interfaces
  • Lead design of a major user interface, including evaluating opportunities to extend or integrate existing proven interface patterns
  • Facilitate internal stakeholders’ product vision through research, wireframing, prototyping, and mockups
  • Design and deliver wireframes, storyboards, prototypes, user stories, user journeys, and mockups for program reviews and demos
  • Identify design problems in complex, real-time ground system software and devise elegant, operator-friendly solutions
  • Make strategic design and UX decisions related to product functions and features
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Program Manager, systems engineers, and software engineers throughout the program’s design review cycle
  • Perform usability and heuristic evaluations across the product lifecycle

Requirements

  • Mission-Driven Professional: Collaborative contributor motivated by the opportunity to develop cutting-edge solutions that protect and serve both the nation and the world.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, a related design field, or Computer Science, with 2+ years of related experience (additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree)
  • Demonstrated ability to both design and personally build production UI - not design-only: hands-on experience shipping interfaces in React, TypeScript, and Next.js
  • In-depth knowledge of web development fundamentals including HTML and CSS
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems and reusable component libraries
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA) and how to design/build to them
  • Experience employing an iterative, user-centered design process in UX design and interactive prototyping (e.g., Figma)
  • A portfolio of work illustrating both design craft and shipped product work

WHAT THE TEAM PREFERS:

  • Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, a related design field, or Computer Science, with 2+ years of related experience (additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree)
  • Experience designing interfaces for simulation, training, or scenario-based operator tools
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted or data-driven interface features (e.g., RAG-based assistance, semantic search, tool-calling agents) as applied to operator workflows
  • Experience with Swift/SwiftUI or Three.js for richer visualization or cross-platform prototyping
  • Knowledge of satellite communications concepts, including communications theory, link budgets, wireless communications, and satellite system components
