Engineering Manager, Application Data Base Administration & Engineering

Experteer Overview As Senior Engineering Manager for the App DBA organization, you will steer strategy and execution for enterprise database services across ~20,000 databases. You’ll partner with engineering, architecture, infrastructure, and business leaders to drive modernization, automation, and cloud adoption while delivering reliable, scalable data platforms. You will lead a growing team of engineers and DBAs, shaping the future of the bank’s data capabilities and technology transformations. This role combines deep software leadership with strong database expertise to enable high-performing, enterprise-wide solutions. Compensation / Benefits * Provide strategic leadership for the App DBA organization to ensure availability, scalability, reliability, and performance of enterprise database platforms * Lead and develop a growing engineering team supporting mission-critical database services * Define vision, priorities, operating model, and performance expectations aligned with business objectives * Partner with Infrastructure, Architecture, Software Engineering, and Line of Business leaders for cross-platform alignment * Analyze business requirements with clients and propose innovative solutions for future needs * Build strong partnerships with stakeholders to enable successful technology delivery * Contribute to software engineering initiatives beyond database administration * Oversee large-scale engineering programs and technology transformations * Drive automation, modernization, and cloud adoption while ensuring operational excellence * Monitor trends and vendor solutions to increase business value and effectiveness * Manage multiple cost centers, budgets, and resource utilization * Oversee department operations including financial management, risk and compliance, and talent development * Direct staff allocation, project delivery, and adherence to standards and timelines * Ensure designs meet business and technology requirements and governance controls * Identify and mitigate risks impacting delivery, and maintain project health * Coach and develop leaders and engineers, fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning * Exercise staffing, performance, and succession planning responsibilities * Adhere to risk, regulatory standards, and internal control requirements * Promote belonging and uphold M&T Bank brand * Perform other related duties as assigned Tasks * Minimum 13 years of combined education and work experience with at least 4 years in engineering/architecture and 9 years in technology management/leadership * Proven leadership in Application Database Administration, Database Engineering, Data Platform Engineering, Software Engineering, or related enterprise tech * Strong software engineering leadership with success leading large-scale programs * Experience leading teams in enterprise-scale production environments and large platforms * Deep knowledge of Oracle and SQL Server; experience with PostgreSQL and cloud databases preferred * Ability to set vision, develop talent, and influence across diverse stakeholders * Experience partnering with senior technology leaders, infrastructure, architecture, and business stakeholders * Focus on reliability, scalability, modernization, and continuous improvement in large operations * Ability to balance strategic planning, financial management, and operational execution * Proficiency with project management, word processing, and spreadsheets * Experience with SDLC, production problem resolution, and multiple simultaneous projects * Strong communication, analytical, decision-making, and organizational skills * Experience presenting to senior management * Ability to lead teams across geographies and time zones Key requirements *
