Job description

The Database Administrator provides database management and technical support for assigned database systems. This role is responsible for supporting reliable database performance, backup and recovery processes, troubleshooting, and ongoing database maintenance to meet current and future organizational needs. The position works closely with systems architecture, application development, and application support teams to maintain a secure, efficient, and high-performing database environment.

This position is distinguished by its advanced database knowledge, ownership of database outcomes start-to-finish, and responsibility for identifying problems, determining root causes, recommending solutions, and supporting long-term improvements in database performance. The role also serves as a senior technical resource by helping to train and develop technical support and application staff in using online processing database environments.

The Database Administrator is expected to stay current with industry trends, identify effective tools for troubleshooting and maintenance, and develop methods to continually assess database performance and identify areas for improvement.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides a quick response, good/effective communication, courteous and complete follow-up, and engages in an understanding of the individual business needs.
  • Works with systems architecture, application development, and application support to achieve a state-of-the-art environment which meets current and future business objectives.
  • Trains and develops technical support and applications staff to better utilize online processing database environments.
  • Exhibits knowledge and experience with databases.
  • Ensures databases have a reliable backup plan and sound recovery procedures.
  • Assumes full ownership of all outcomes start to finish. Multitasks and prioritizes tasks using appropriate critical decision-making skills.
  • Identifies problems, probable causes, impacts on operations, and reports to stakeholders per department procedure. Offers possible solutions and determines the optimal course of action.
  • Pursues opportunities for self-development. Stays current with industry trends as they relate to job responsibilities.
  • Identifies the best available tools for database troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Develops a methodology for the ongoing assessment of database performance and the identification of problem areas.
  • Supports and models behaviors consistent with Billings Clinic’s mission, vision, values, code of business conduct and service expectations. Meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements. Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency standards as it relates to the environment, employee, patient safety or job performance.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or as needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant computer specialty required, * Minimum of three (3) years of hands-on database development and design experience, with an emphasis on Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience implementing release management, backup procedures, and replication for database systems required.
  • Healthcare industry experience preferred.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Current Montana driver’s license or the ability to obtain a Montana driver’s license within established departmental guidelines required. Must be eligible to be insured to operate Billings Clinic vehicles, if applicable.

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Employees that require a licensed or certification must be properly licensed/certified and the licensure/certification must be in good standing.
