Job description

The Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS) under the Department of Computer Science & Engineering in the Baskin School of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites qualified individuals to apply to our ongoing pool for the position of Practitioner in Residence. Practitioners contribute to the CROSS academic environment by offering feedback and critique on CROSS projects, collaborating on research opportunities, and providing guidance to CROSS researchers and leadership. We seek qualified individuals who are professional practitioners to support the academic and professional endeavors of CROSS. Experts in open source software development and communities are encouraged to apply.

CROSS aims to turn graduate-level research prototypes into successful software projects with vibrant user and developer communities. To meet this goal, the CROSS team uses a combination of teaching, research, and incubation of open source projects. Our proximity to Silicon Valley allows us to match our world-class research expertise with leading tech experts. We draw from this expertise to choose projects that will have maximum real-world impact.

Requirements

Position title: CROSS Practitioner in Residence (Junior, Assistant, Associate and Specialist ranks), Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted) Bachelor’s degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree). Experience in open source software development.

Benefits & conditions

Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience (see section D. Qualifications of the CAPM 602.230 Specialist Series. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $57,000 - $201,700.

Percent time: Variable percentages of time (50%-100%), based on available funding and/or work., Under Federal law, the University of California may employ only individuals who are legally able to work in the United States as established by providing documents as specified in the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Certain UCSC positions funded by federal contracts or sub-contracts require the selected candidate to pass an E-Verify check. The university sponsors employment-based visas for nonresidents who are offered academic appointments at UC Santa Cruz, as outlined in campus policy CAPM 102.530.
