Job description

Experteer Overview As a Software Engineer at Gusto, you help build Gus, the AI-powered assistant and scalable AI experiences that serve millions of users. You own end-to-end projects-from specs to deployment-working at the intersection of AI capabilities and real business needs. You collaborate with ML, product, and design teams to deliver customer-facing features and platform improvements. This role offers ownership, cross-functional impact, and the chance to shape AI-powered experiences at scale. Compensation / Benefits * Architect, build, and test AI-focused technologies within Gusto’s product suite * Create standardized, self-serve patterns to extend Gus across web, voice, email, and agents * Collaborate with ML and product teams on prompt engineering, flows, and escalation logic with data-driven improvements * Mentor engineers on AI, scalability, and platform infrastructure challenges * Scale a large Ruby/Rails and React application serving millions of users * Collaborate with Product, Design, Security, and Technical Operations to deliver customer-centric solutions * Build customer-facing products end-to-end that customers rely on daily Tasks * 8+ years of software development experience * 4+ years building scalable platforms or high-impact customer-facing products * Strong front-end foundation with Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, or similar full-stack frameworks * Track record of owning multi-quarter projects delivering measurable customer impact at scale * Experience building internal platforms or developer-facing infrastructure * Excellent cross-functional communication and mentoring abilities * Product-minded with focus on performance, reliability, and quality * Bonus: AI platform development experience or learning orientation toward AI technologies and prompt systems Key requirements * competitive base pay * benefits * equity (RSUs) * hybrid work expectations * office locations in Denver, San Francisco, New York * Total Rewards philosophy
