Job description

Experteer Overview As a Staff Software Engineer, you will advance M&S’s Experimentation platform to empower product, engineering, and content teams to run more experiments reliably. You’ll shape platform design, promote a self-service model, and drive scalable, production-grade solutions. You collaborate across disciplines to identify needs and reduce toil, delivering robust APIs, tooling, and automation. This role offers the chance to influence architecture, champion observability, and contribute to a data-driven, experimentation-led culture. Pay / Benefits * Design and evolve backend-heavy platform capabilities for experimentation (APIs, services, automation pipelines, developer tooling) * Set technical direction for the Experimentation platform and influence architecture and standards beyond the team * Promote a self-service platform model with tooling and automation including AI use cases * Collaborate with product, engineering, and content teams to understand needs and future demand * Mentor engineers to develop technical judgment, platform thinking, and craft * Emphasize production-first principles: observability, resilience, and safe change * Create clear, high-quality documentation for APIs, systems, standards, and operations Tasks * Platform mindset targeting broad reuse across teams * Deep backend engineering experience with Java/Kotlin and distributed systems in production * Strong Azure cloud experience for building and operating scalable services * Solid understanding of experimentation solutions (Optimizely experience is a strong plus) * Hands-on GraphQL (schema design, federation, evolution, API governance) is mandatory * Working knowledge of TypeScript and React in API/tooling contexts Key requirements * 20% colleague discount on M&S products * Competitive holiday allowance * Pension and life assurance * Tailored induction and training * M&S Choices portal perks * Parental, adoption and neonatal leave
