Job description

A leading commercial insurance carrier is seeking an AVP, Claims Technical Claims Office to support the organization’s most complex, high-exposure claim matters. This is a coverage-intensive role focused on legal strategy, trial oversight, executive reporting, and resolution planning across General Liability, Business Auto, Excess/Umbrella, Inland Marine, and Professional Liability claims, including Programs and Middle Markets.

This is not a direct people-management role and is not a corporate officer position. The person selected will serve as a senior technical claims resource for complex coverage matters, high-severity losses, litigation strategy, and leadership-facing claim recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy on complex coverage matters, high-severity claims, multi-jurisdictional disputes, class actions, declaratory judgment actions, and suits against the company.
  • Oversee trial strategy, litigation direction, loss evaluation, reserve adequacy, and resolution planning on high-exposure matters.
  • Evaluate coverage, liability, damages, reserves, litigation posture, trial exposure, loss potential, and resolution options.
  • Prepare reports, legal analysis, recommendations, and executive-level updates for senior claims leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Partner with Claims, Legal, Underwriting, and technical claims leadership on coverage issues, claim strategy, emerging risks, and decision-making.
  • Monitor commercial insurance law, emerging case law, claim trends, coverage trends, and fair claim practices.
  • Support cross-functional claim initiatives focused on complex claims, technical claim handling, and litigation oversight.
  • Travel as needed for business purposes.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor required.
  • Active bar license required and must be in good standing.
  • Minimum of 10 years of attorney experience.
  • Significant claims experience required; legal practice experience alone is not enough.
  • Strong background in complex coverage, high-exposure claims, coverage litigation, trial strategy, and severe claim outcomes.
  • Experience handling or overseeing multi-jurisdictional claims, class actions, declaratory judgment actions, suits against an insurer, and high-exposure commercial claim matters.
  • Experience with General Liability, Business Auto, Excess/Umbrella, Inland Marine, Professional Liability, Programs, and/or Middle Markets.
  • Strong writing, reporting, legal analysis, negotiation, and recommendation skills.
  • Ability to advise senior claims leadership, legal, insureds, brokers, counsel, and internal business partners.
  • Strong judgment, prioritization, and ability to influence without direct reporting authority.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Power BI or similar reporting tools a plus.
  • Hybrid schedule; locations include Morristown, NJ or Hartford, CT.

Benefits & conditions

Compensation Package

  • Base salary range: $145K - $200K.
  • 15% target bonus.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, prescription coverage, 401(k), PTO, paid holidays, volunteer time off, life and disability coverage, paid parental leave, student loan assistance, tuition reimbursement, and backup child/elder care.
