Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend AI Software Engineer (all) - TypeScript / NodeJS based in Germany.

As a Backend AI Software Engineer, you will design and build robust, scalable, and high-performance backend systems that power innovative digital health products. You will work primarily with TypeScript and Node.js to develop APIs, data processing pipelines, integrations, and distributed services. The role combines hands-on software engineering with cloud infrastructure, database optimization, security, and AI-assisted development. You will contribute to architectural decisions, performance improvements, automated testing, and reliable deployment across modern cloud environments. Collaboration will be central, with close interaction across frontend engineering, product, design, and other technical teams. You will work in a fast-moving, international environment where engineers have meaningful ownership and can directly influence the products they build. This is an opportunity to apply modern backend and AI technologies to digital health solutions designed to create meaningful impact for patients worldwide. Accountabilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain clean, efficient, scalable, and reliable backend applications using TypeScript, JavaScript, and Node.js.
  • Build and maintain robust RESTful APIs and integrate third-party APIs and external services.
  • Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms, including JWT and OAuth-based approaches.
  • Develop data processing pipelines, background jobs, and backend workflows that support reliable product functionality.
  • Design, optimize, and maintain database schemas, migrations, queries, and data structures, with a primary focus on MongoDB and Redis.
  • Ensure data consistency, integrity, availability, and database performance through effective design and ongoing optimization.
  • Design scalable backend architectures using distributed-systems principles, caching strategies, load balancing, and appropriate scaling approaches.
  • Implement performance optimizations and caching solutions using technologies such as Redis or Memcached.
  • Deploy and manage backend applications across cloud environments including AWS and GCP.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automated testing processes, and deployment workflows.
  • Monitor application performance, investigate production issues, and implement effective troubleshooting and reliability improvements.
  • Apply security best practices and support appropriate compliance requirements across applications and infrastructure.
  • Effectively leverage AI-assisted development tools as part of daily engineering activities to improve productivity and development quality.
  • Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Participate in code reviews, uphold engineering standards, and create comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Contribute to event-driven architectures, message-based systems, monitoring, logging, and data or machine-learning integrations where required.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional backend software development experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience supported by a strong technical portfolio.
  • Strong hands-on expertise with TypeScript/JavaScript and Node.js as a primary backend technology.
  • Experience with backend frameworks such as Express.js and familiarity with React for full-stack development is beneficial.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and integrating external services.
  • Understanding of API security, authentication, and authorization, including JWT and OAuth.
  • Experience with MongoDB and Redis, including database design, query optimization, caching, and data migration strategies.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, scalable architecture, load balancing, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with message queues and event-driven systems such as RabbitMQ or Apache Kafka.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and/or GCP cloud environments.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration.
  • Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows using GitHub or GitLab.
  • Experience with unit, integration, and end-to-end testing frameworks, as well as performance testing and optimization.
  • Experience with API documentation and development tools such as Swagger and Postman.
  • Ability to effectively use AI-assisted development tools in day-to-day software engineering.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities, with the ability to collaborate effectively in agile environments.
  • Experience with event-driven architecture, monitoring and logging platforms such as ELK, Prometheus, or Grafana is a plus.
  • Knowledge of machine learning integrations, data pipelines, Elasticsearch, or Solr is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with React Native or Expo is a bonus for candidates with cross-platform development exposure.
  • Candidates must have the legal right to live and work within the European Union.

Benefits & conditions

  • 100% remote working environment with flexibility to work from anywhere within the eligible region.
  • Opportunity to work on innovative digital health technology with the potential to positively impact millions of patients.
  • High-growth environment where individual contributions and technical decisions have visible impact.
  • International and diverse team bringing together professionals from multiple nationalities and cultural backgrounds.
  • Regular team events and company offsite weeks in attractive locations.
  • Provision of high-quality IT equipment, including a Mac computer.
  • Opportunities to work with modern technologies across TypeScript, Node.js, AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, distributed systems, and AI-assisted development.
  • Strong opportunities for technical growth, learning, and ownership within a fast-moving engineering environment.
  • Collaborative culture where engineers work closely with product, design, and other technical disciplines.
  • Exposure to complex digital health, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and data-driven technology challenges.
