Job description

Government Digital and Data (GDD) will be used to determine if you will be paid an additional allowance, on top of your basic salary, this may be up to £16,907. This assessment is reviewed annually with moderation across Ministry of Justice staff. This role is within the Data job family and is an Analytics Engineer role at Lead Analytics Engineer level., Due to the nature of the role, part-time requests will be considered at a minimum of 30 hours. Flexible working will be considered on a case-by-case basis., The Data, Analysis and Insight team plays a pivotal role in supporting a whole range of senior leaders across the business through reporting, analysis and insights. Our work supports the organisation’s overall strategy and empowers senior leaders to make strategic, data driven business decisions. In December 2021 we published our Data Strategy, setting out HMCTS’s commitment to becoming a data driven organisation.

As part of this strategy, HMCTS has invested in a cloud-based strategic data platform to transform the ways in which we work with data and enable us to add more value than ever to the organisation and the public. This platform is now technically complete, and we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join our team and help us exploit our new technology.

This role will be based in our Data Management and Engineering team responsible for holding, curating, and protecting our data to drive value for our organisation both now and into the future.

Your role as the Lead Analytics Engineer encompasses several key aspects (but not limited to):

Lead and manage a team of data engineering professionals to deliver business-as-usual data, reporting, and analytics outputs.

Ensure operational data from case management systems is effectively shared, disseminated, and utilised within reports, management information, and official statistics.

Collaborate with data analysts and data scientists to develop, manage, and automate regular data and reporting processes.

Communicate delivery plans, timescales, and progress updates to stakeholders, enabling effective onward management and decision-making.

Contribute to development priorities by identifying opportunities for process automation, efficiencies, and resource optimisation.

Support the organisation’s strategic data transformation by deploying and managing resources effectively.

Develop and implement new technologies to enhance data management, accuracy, and accessibility.

Maintain comprehensive documentation, including data dictionaries and data lineage information, for a wide range of stakeholders.

Lead the development and maintenance of robust data models to support reporting and analytical requirements.

Ensure data processes are efficient, reliable, and scalable.

Establish and oversee a robust data quality assurance framework to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

Enable evidence-based decision-making through the provision of reliable, accurate, and trusted data.

Requirements

Experience leading and developing data engineering or technical teams, managing priorities, resources, and business-as-usual delivery.

Strong experience designing and managing data models, ETL processes, and data integration solutions.

Advanced SQL and relational database skills (e.g. Oracle, PL/SQL, SQL Server, T-SQL).

Experience delivering automated data, reporting, and analytics solutions to improve efficiency and business outcomes.

Proven ability to implement and oversee data quality, assurance, and governance processes.

Experience working with a range of stakeholders to define requirements and deliver data solutions that meet business needs.

Experience maintaining data documentation, including data lineage, metadata, and data dictionaries.

Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, dimensional modelling, and data management best practice.

Experience with Python, Spark, or other programming and scripting languages.

Experience developing cloud-based data solutions using Azure Data Factory, Databricks, or similar technologies.

Knowledge of CI/CD, DevOps, Git repositories, and automated deployment practices.

Experience driving data transformation, automation, or modernisation initiatives.

Knowledge of Agile delivery methodologies and tools such as Azure DevOps, Jira, or Trello., You will have access to a wide range of tools to continually develop and enhance your Data skills, such as access to Microsoft Azure training courses via our partnership with Microsoft, online training such as DataCamp or Pluralsight, webinars, courses, one-to-one coaching and access to a large peer-support network.
