Job description

The 3rd Line Support Engineer is responsible for the support, administration, maintenance, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the organisation’s IT infrastructure. Acting as the highest technical escalation point within the support function, the role ensures the availability, security, resilience, and performance of infrastructure services across multiple sites. The post-holder will provide expert technical support, contribute to infrastructure projects and service development, participate in an on-call rota and out-of-hours maintenance activities, and work closely with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and support teams to deliver reliable and effective IT services., * Provide 3rd line technical support for complex infrastructure, server, network, storage, virtualisation, and communications technologies.

  • Monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure incidents to minimise service disruption and downtime.
  • Support and maintain enterprise infrastructure services including LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, VMware environments, Servers, storage platforms, and telephony solutions.
  • Design, implement, test, and support secure, resilient, and highly available infrastructure solutions.
  • Perform infrastructure upgrades, patching, configuration changes, maintenance activities, and planned out-of-hours work.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery, business continuity, security, and infrastructure management procedures.
  • Analyse infrastructure performance and capacity data, producing reports and recommendations to improve service effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Research emerging technologies and contribute to the development and implementation of new infrastructure solutions.
  • Create, maintain, and review technical documentation, operational procedures, standards, and support processes.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and escalation support to Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams.
  • Communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, and partner organisations.
  • Deliver technical training, mentoring, and knowledge sharing to IT colleagues and end users as required.
  • Participate in major incident management, emergency support, and on-call rotas.
  • Travel to remote sites as required to support infrastructure services and project delivery.

Requirements

  • Strong experience supporting enterprise-scale IT infrastructure environments.
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows Server, VMware virtualisation, networking technologies (LAN, WAN and Wi-Fi), enterprise storage, server hardware, and telephony/VoIP systems.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure security, resilience, disaster recovery, and business continuity principles.
  • Proven ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues across infrastructure, server, network, and communications environments.
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring, performance optimisation, capacity planning, patch management, and change control processes.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, third-party suppliers, and senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritise workloads, manage multiple tasks, and work effectively under pressure.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and keeping up to date with emerging technologies and industry best practices.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel between sites and participate in out-of-hours support activities.
