Job description
The Thermal Test & Development (T&D) Engineer BEV is responsible for the collation, analysis and delivery of physical data to support the attribute targets specifically for the BEV products. Working to develop and communicate technical design solutions to their respective Thermal Lead Engineers (LEs) and Functional Lead Engineers (FLs) and other relevant system groups (e.g. Design, Body, Powertrain). The successful candidate will also support the Thermal LEs/FLs with vehicle/rig test data and recommendations including technical reports and presentation as required. You will be expected to work closely with the Thermal LEs/FLs, the other members of the Vehicle Efficiency (VEff) group, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Technical Specialists (TS) to support the whole Thermal team.
The Thermal Management team is part of Thermal & Aerodynamic Systems Engineering (TASE), itself a subset of the Vehicle Efficiency group which consists of Aerodynamics & Aeroacoustics, Weights, Vehicle Efficiency Steering Team (VEST), Thermal Energy Management (TEM), and Electrical Energy Management (EEM). In conjunction with the Thermal LEs/FLs, the Thermal team is responsible for delivery of the Thermal Attribute across all vehicle programmes and the development of associated toolsets. The Thermal Attribute requirements primarily include the delivery of cooling airflow for the powertrain (internal combustion, hybrid and electric), driveline, battery system and brakes, and the management of the engine bay and under body thermal environment to ensure acceptable temperatures are maintained for all systems and components.
WHAT YOUâLL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
Own the T&D aspects for the Design Verification Plan (DVP) for the given programme(s)Own the delivery and maintenance of the test properties and consumables, whether vehicle or rig basedWork closely with the Thermal CAE/CFD team to determine the requirements for data collection from testing to support vehicle ESOUndertake physical property test work, be it vehicle or rig based, in the climatic facilities, in-market, or on proving groundsCollate and analyse the Thermal data from the test properties/rigs required to support decision making and vehicle development for the given programme(s).Be the technical fact holder regarding the test properties/rigs for the given programme(s)Support the T&D aspects of technical design guidelines in conjunction with the TS and SMEsAny other work as directed by the line manager in connection with the job to deliver the attribute as may be requested from time to time
Requirements
Educated to Degree level with a proven record of vehicle Test & Development experienceKnowledge and experience of vehicle communication systems, e.g. ETAS/INCA, VECTOR/CANalyserKnowledge and experience of using logging and data acquisition systems, e.g. ETAS/INCA, IpetronikKnowledge and experience of data processing from data acquisition systems, e.g. ETAS/MDA, IpemotionA good understanding of thermodynamic and aerodynamic principlesAn excellent appreciation of the fundamentals of vehicle engineering and their constructionExcellent IT skills and the ability to manage large datasets
Desirable:
Experience in one or more of the areas of cooling performance, brake cooling, under body component thermal management, and infotainment cooling, climate/HVAC systemsExperience in ElectrificationExperience of CAE/CFD, their use and CAD toolsExperience in vehicle testing, ideally thermal testingExperience of working with Design, Exterior Trim, Powertrain, Chassis, Thermal Energy Management and Electrification, ClimateExperience of PCDS, AIMs and the Virtual Series process
