Sr. Backend Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who loves to be deep in the code. You’re the kind of engineer who

takes pride in writing clean, thoughtful Java, obsesses over system design, and doesn’t shy away from working on

production issues. You’ll work on building and managing microservices end-to-end - from design and

implementation through deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting in live environments. This is a hands-on,

heads-down role where your technical instincts will directly shape the reliability and performance of BILL’s

5-8 years of professional software engineering experience, with deep hands-on Java development

throughout.

• Strong microservices design and implementation experience - you can architect a service from scratch and

reason clearly about its boundaries, dependencies, and failure modes.

• Solid debugging and problem-solving skills; comfortable investigating complex issues across service

boundaries in production environments.

• Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tooling, specifically Datadog and/or Splunk -

building dashboards, writing alert rules, and using traces and logs to diagnose issues.

• Strong working knowledge of SQL and/or NoSQL databases - schema design, indexing strategies, and

query performance optimization.

• Experience deploying and operating backend services on AWS (e.g., EC2, RDS, Lambda, S3, SQS,

DynamoDB, API Gateway).

• Experience building RESTful APIs and working with event-driven or messaging-based architectures.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern deployment practices.

• Strong communication and design skills - you can write a clear design doc, articulate trade-offs to peers,

and engage constructively in technical discussions.

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
