- Process and maintain patient medical records and Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with established procedures.
- Sort, scan, index, store, and retrieve medical records in electronic and/or physical formats.
- Process Release of Information (ROI) requests from internal and external customers.
- Perform medical record analysis and identify missing, duplicate, or inaccurate information.
- Identify and report documentation deficiencies and support deficiency management processes.
- Review records for accuracy, completeness, and proper organization.
- Take appropriate corrective actions when errors or duplicate records are identified.
- Prioritize scanning and indexing activities based on patient needs, including records associated with upcoming appointments.
- Serve as a resource for care teams when addressing patient record access or documentation concerns.
- Respond to requests and inquiries professionally, promptly, and appropriately.
- Follow established departmental, organizational, federal, state, and accrediting agency standards.
- Maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality when handling sensitive patient information.
- Collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and other departments to support efficient patient care.
- Demonstrate strong teamwork and communication in a highly coordinated healthcare environment.
Requirements
We are seeking a detail-oriented HIM Specialist I to support Health Information Management operations in a healthcare environment. This role will be responsible for the accurate processing, maintenance, storage, retrieval, scanning, indexing, and analysis of Protected Health Information (PHI) and patient medical records. The ideal candidate will have strong attention to detail, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with healthcare teams while maintaining the confidentiality and accuracy of patient information., * Experience with medical record maintenance, storage, and retrieval.
- Hands-on experience with scanning and indexing.
- Knowledge of Release of Information (ROI) processes.
- Experience with record analysis and deficiency management.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to identify errors in patient records.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize work based on urgency and patient needs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple departments and healthcare teams.
- Strong understanding of patient medical record accuracy and confidentiality.
Education & Qualifications Required:
- High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred:
- 1 year of related experience.
- 1 3 years of progressive Health Information Management (HIM) experience.
- Current student in an AHIMA-accredited program.
- RHIT, RHIA, CCA, or CCS certification.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
