Job description

Reliable infrastructure is about more than keeping systems running. It means understanding how an environment works, solving problems at their source and creating systems that become easier to manage over time. As a System Engineer at ILIAS Solutions, you take ownership of the infrastructure behind our international organization. This is an internal IT position: you will not work directly with customers, but you will support the people who build, deliver, implement and support the ILIAS Defense Platform. You work across Linux systems, hybrid infrastructure and automation. Alongside day-to-day operations, you look for patterns: where recurring work can be automated, where configurations can become more consistent and where better documentation can make the environment easier to understand. The goal is clear: continue moving infrastructure from reactive support towards a structured, automated and predictable engineering environment.

ILIAS develops software for demanding defense and security environments, and the people behind that work depend on reliable technology every day. As part of Internal IT, your impact is internal but reaches across the organization: you help create the technical foundation that enables development teams to build, implementation teams to deliver and support teams to help customers. When infrastructure is stable, secure and well managed, colleagues across Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and the United States can work with fewer disruptions and greater confidence.

  • Manage and improve the internal server infrastructure that supports ILIAS employees across offices, teams and business functions.
  • Take ownership of Linux system administration, including installation, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting, patching and performance follow-up.
  • Use Ansible to automate recurring work, standardize configurations and make infrastructure changes repeatable, traceable and less dependent on manual execution.
  • Maintain Linux and Windows Server environments across VMware, Azure and on-premises infrastructure.
  • Investigate complex infrastructure, system, software and network issues with an analytical mindset and a focus on sustainable solutions, not quick fixes only.
  • Contribute to clear documentation, monitoring, backup routines, operational procedures and continuous improvement of internal IT processes.
  • Support secure and reliable access to the internal systems and infrastructure services used by ILIAS colleagues every day.
  • Work with the reliability, quality and security awareness expected from a company active in the defence domain and certified according to ISO 9001 and Cyber Essentials., At ILIAS, you deepen your expertise in Linux, automation and hybrid infrastructure within an environment where reliability and operational continuity matter. You work close to complex systems, experienced colleagues and the daily reality of an international organization active in defense technology.

Learning remains practical and directly linked to the work. Through hands-on exposure, structured training opportunities, clear growth paths and the right tools and guidance, you continue building capability over time. As your expertise grows, so does your impact on stable, secure and predictable IT environments that support ILIAS today and prepare us for what comes next.

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Linux System Administrator or System Engineer.
  • Strong hands-on expertise in Linux server environments. Linux is not a side topic in this role; it is one of the core areas where we need depth.
  • Solid experience with Ansible, including playbooks, automation and configuration management.
  • Good knowledge of Azure and experience with cloud or hybrid infrastructure environments.
  • Knowledge of VMware and Windows Server environments.
  • A security-minded approach to infrastructure and operations.
  • Strong analytical thinking skills: you can investigate issues thoroughly, identify root causes and explain your reasoning clearly.
  • A predictable and transparent way of working: you document what you do, communicate clearly and keep colleagues informed before, during and after changes.
  • The maturity to take ownership, challenge unclear requests, ask the right questions and work towards sustainable improvements.
  • A degree in IT, Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • At least C1 level in Dutch and English.
