Job description

A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience., * Administers departmental servers, applications, storage, authentication services, and other technology systems supporting instructional, research, and administrative operations.

  • Performs installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, maintenance, and license administration for supported systems and applications.
  • Monitors system availability, capacity, performance, security, and reliability and responds to identified issues.
  • Participates in technology lifecycle planning and recommends replacement or upgrade strategies for supported systems and equipment.
  • Troubleshoots complex system, application, access, and infrastructure problems and implements appropriate corrective actions.
  • Applies applicable university security standards and technical controls, including patching, access management, vulnerability remediation, and secure system configuration.
  • Assists with response and recovery activities related to system outages, technology failures, or suspected security incidents.
  • Coordinates with Chemistry IT staff, CLAS IT, UFIT, and other technical resources as needed to resolve system changes or security issues.

ENDPOINT AND USER SUPPORT

  • Manages and supports departmental computing devices and networked workstations used by faculty, staff, students, laboratories and instructional spaces.
  • Deploys and maintains operating systems, applications, configurations, software updates, and security controls using centralized management and automation tools including SCCM, InTune and JAMF.
  • Diagnoses and resolves hardware, software, connectivity, authentication, and access issues.
  • Provides technical consultation and support to users with varying levels of technical expertise.
  • Assists with the installation, replacement, configuration, and lifecycle management of departmental technology equipment.

TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS AND SECURITY

  • Designs, develops, configures, and implements technical solutions in response to departmental instructional, research, and administrative needs in compliance with UF policy.
  • Develops scripts, automations, integrations, and system configurations that improve reliability, efficiency, consistency, or user experience.
  • Tests, validates and documents new or modified technical solutions prior to implementation.
  • Troubleshoots unusual or complex technical problems.

  • Supports departmental cybersecurity practices and assists with the identification and remediation of security vulnerabilities and configuration concerns.

DOCUMENTATION AND COORDINATION

  • Creates and maintains documentation for departmental IT systems, configurations and procedures.
  • Creates and maintains technical instructions (“How-To”) for end users.
  • Maintains accurate IT asset/inventory information.
  • Participates in Chemistry IT staff meetings and relevant CLAS and university IT meetings, training, and information-sharing activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of developments in information technology, cybersecurity, systems administration, and other technologies relevant to assigned responsibilities.

OTHER DUTIES AS NECESSARY Expected Salary: $65,000 - $75,000

Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred:

  • Experience administering and supporting complex information technology infrastructure, systems, or platforms within an academic, research, laboratory or similarly complex environment.
  • Experience supporting end users in complex technical environments.
  • Experience administering Windows, macOS, and Linux/Unix operating systems.
  • Experience with Windows and Linux server administration, storage, backup / recovery, and system monitoring.
  • Knowledge of networking, identity and access management, authentication protocols, security hardening, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Experience with endpoint management tools including SCCM, InTune, JAMF and Satellite.
  • Familiarity with virtualization and containerization technologies.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using languages or tools such as Python, Bash, PowerShell, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with directory services, identity federation, and authentication technologies including Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems and communicate technical information effectively to users with varying levels of technical expertise.
