Requirements

This role would suit a senior IT systems engineer keen to lead major projects, exploring the latest technologies from first principles and building systems from the ground up. Experience is particularly sought in storage clusters and on-premises extensions to cloud services for SMEs.

You will have interest and experience in greenfield projects: discussing requirements, technology investigation, purchasing hardware and software, setup, troubleshooting, monitoring and maintenance. You’ll also be able to pick up existing projects, and get to grips with potentially new technical detail. Leadership where required, good teamworking, multi-tasking, communication skills and adaptability are core facets.

You will have:

  • Strong networking skills (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS, ports and protocols, routers, bridges, latency, packet loss, firewall rules, VPNs, knowledge of MTUs etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server systems administration (Active Directory, GPOs, RADIUS, CA management, RDS, PowerShell)
  • Strong knowledge of Linux systems administration (Ubuntu, Exim, DoveCot, Samba, Apache2, OpenSSL, PAM, SELinux)
  • Strong knowledge of email (DMARC, SPF, SMTP, MX, IMAP)

Ideally you will also have:

  • Database administration and architecture for SQL Server and/or Oracle or similar
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID administration
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards
  • Familiarity with virtual machine hosts and storage clusters
  • Azure, AWS, GCP knowledge

It’s likely you will be local to the Cambridge area. Flexible hours, and hybrid working up to 60%, are standard. There is an on-call element, one week in four for rare emergencies only, compensated for with extra holiday annually.
