Job description

We are seeking an exceptional Senior Research Software Engineer to join the Health Informatics Centre at the University of Dundee.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to HT-Advance, a €14 million European research consortium developing AI-powered tools to improve the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension. Working alongside leading researchers, clinicians and software engineers across Europe, you’ll help translate cutting-edge machine learning research into secure, clinically applicable solutions with the potential to improve patient outcomes.

As Senior Research Software Engineer, you will play a leading role in delivering the software and machine learning components of the HT-Advance project, helping to develop next-generation AI tools for hypertension diagnosis and treatment. Working closely with researchers, software developers and clinical partners across six European countries, you will develop and enhance machine learning models using multi- omics data collected from patients, contribute to secure software development within a regulated environment, and support the creation of clinical prototype software suitable for real-world evaluation.

You will be responsible for:

  • developing and maintaining machine learning models using R and multi-omics datasets to support clinical decision-making.
  • Working with international collaborators to integrate standardised research data into secure software pipelines.
  • Supporting the development of clinical prototype software and AI-enabled research applications.
  • Applying security-by-design principles and contributing to software development that meets emerging regulatory requirements for AI in healthcare.
  • Presenting research findings through publications, conferences and consortium meetings.
  • Mentoring junior researchers and contributing to the wider academic and research community within HIC.

Who we’re looking for

  • Essential
  • A Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience developing AI or machine learning solutions within research or healthcare.
  • Strong programming skills in R, with experience of SQL and data management.
  • Experience of software development best practices, including version control and software testing.
  • An academic publication record appropriate to career stage.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to a range of audiences.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary and international teams.
  • A problem solver prepared to be flexible.
