Job description

We are looking for a Business-as-Usual (BAU) Engineer with a strong automation and AI mindset to join our AWS BAU team. This role is critical to ensuring stable day-to-day operations while leading the adoption of AI-driven automation and operational intelligence across our cloud estate.

The successful candidate will combine hands-on BAU operational expertise with the ability to identify, design, and deliver automation opportunities using AI, scripting, and cloud-native tooling, helping the team move from reactive operations to proactive, self-healing services.

Key Responsibilities

BAU & Operational Excellence

  • Own and execute day-to-day BAU operations, including system monitoring, incident resolution, patching, and routine maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues across Linux servers, AWS infrastructure, applications, and networking layers.
  • Ensure adherence to SLAs, ITSM processes (Incident, Change, Problem), and operational controls.
  • Perform root cause analysis (RCA) and implement long-term corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support scheduled maintenance, upgrades, certificate renewals, and capacity planning.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation, runbooks, SOPs, and knowledge articles.
  • Lead the automation journey within BAU, identifying repetitive, error-prone, or manual processes suitable for automation.
  • Design and implement automation solutions using scripting, Ansible, AWS services, and AI-assisted tooling.
  • Leverage AI/ML and GenAI capabilities (e.g., AWS Bedrock, Lambda-based automation, AI-driven alert enrichment) to:
  • Improve incident triage and diagnostics
  • Reduce MTTR

Enhance monitoring and alert intelligence

  • Partner with SRE, DevOps, Security, and Architecture teams to embed automation and AI into operational workflows.
  • Champion a “shift-left” and “automate-first” mindset across BAU activities.
  • Measure and report on automation outcomes (time saved, incidents reduced, operational efficiency).

Monitoring, Security & Compliance

  • Monitor the estate using Datadog and AWS CloudWatch, proactively responding to alerts and trends.
  • Manage SSL certificate lifecycle and renewals.
  • Execute patch management using tools such as RedHat Satellite and Ansible.
  • Support security operations, vulnerability remediation, and compliance requirements.

Skills & Qualifications (Required)

  • Proven experience in BAU / IT Operations / Cloud Operations roles.
  • Solid hands-on knowledge of AWS services including:
  • EC2, VPC, ELB, RDS, ECS, EFS, EMR, S3, IAM, Lambda, CloudTrail, Config, EBS
  • Experience with ITIL processes (Incident, Change, Problem Management).
  • Strong automation skills using Ansible, scripting (Bash / Python / PowerShell).
  • Experience working with monitoring and observability tools (Datadog preferred).
  • Ability to communicate technical issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proactive mindset with a passion for continuous improvement and automation.
  • Must hold (or be eligible for) SC Clearance.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call support (rotational).
  • Hands-on experience with AI / GenAI initiatives in operations, such as:
  • AI-assisted incident analysis
  • Automated remediation
  • Intelligent alerting or chatbot-based ops support
  • Exposure to AWS Bedrock, Lambda-based automation, or event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with SRE / DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of Docker / container platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Terraform, GitHub Actions, Jenkins.
