Job description

The (USA) Director, Software Engineering leads the execution of complex software and AI/ML systems, ensuring reliability, scalability, and alignment with strategic objectives. This role oversees the full software development lifecycle, champions DevOps practices, and drives cloud cost optimization. The director fosters high-performing teams through mentorship and collaboration, manages cross-functional dependencies, and ensures roadmap alignment with business priorities. By applying sound technical judgment and promoting continuous improvement, this position advances innovative solutions that support business growth and operational excellence within a dynamic technology environment., The Reliability Engineering Platform team develops and maintains enterprise-scale systems that enhance operational reliability and efficiency across Walmart’s technology infrastructure. Focusing on distributed systems, observability, and resiliency automation, the team delivers scalable solutions that reduce systemic risk and provide real-time insights across microservices and multi-region Kubernetes clusters. Team members collaborate to design, implement, and support robust platforms using advanced engineering practices and continuous development. Their work ensures high availability and performance of critical systems, supporting Walmart’s commitment to operational excellence and innovation in technology delivery.

What you’ll do…

  • Lead execution of complex software, data, and AI/ML systems, ensuring reliability, scalability, and integration across platforms.
  • Translate domain strategies into actionable plans, aligning teams with architecture and operational priorities.
  • Oversee full software development lifecycle, championing DevOps practices, observability, and cloud cost optimization.
  • Collaborate with product and data teams to deliver AI-enabled features and autonomous agentic systems.
  • Build and mentor high-performing engineering teams, fostering professional growth and succession planning.
  • Manage cross-functional dependencies, ensuring roadmap alignment and stakeholder engagement.
  • Drive continuous improvement through innovation, risk mitigation, and technical judgment.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership in managing complex software engineering projects with a focus on system reliability, scalability, and integration.
  • Expertise in overseeing full software development lifecycles, including architecture, DevOps, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Strong experience in AI/ML-driven product development and integration using languages such as Python, Java, Rust, and Dart.
  • Demonstrated ability in stakeholder management, project execution, and aligning technology roadmaps with business objectives.
  • Skilled in cloud financial management and optimizing engineering velocity through operational efficiency.
  • Effective people leadership with a focus on mentorship, team development, and succession planning.
  • Proficient in driving continuous improvement and innovation within engineering teams., Outlined below are the required minimum qualifications for this position. If none are listed, there are no minimum qualifications.

Option 1: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Option 2: 8 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

3 years’ supervisory experience.
