Chief Technology Officer ( CTO ) - B2B EdTech Scale Up - YorkshireThis is an opportunity to join a high-growth, private equity-backed EdTech business as its first dedicated Chief Technology Officer. You will lead the technology strategy and engineering function, building a scalable, secure and high-performing platform capable of supporting ambitious growth over the next three years.
- Build and shape the technology strategy as first CTO
- Meaningful equity in a high-growth PE-backed business, As the business’s first dedicated CTO, you will take ownership of the technology strategy, engineering function and roadmap, ensuring technology becomes a genuine enabler of the next phase of growth.Leading an established team of approximately 10 technology professionals, you will provide the technical leadership, structure and direction required to scale effectively without unnecessary complexity or wholesale re-platforming.Key priorities will include:
- Define and deliver a technology roadmap aligned to the three-year growth strategy.
- Ensure the platform remains scalable, secure and resilient as customer volumes increase.
- Simplify and optimise a complex landscape of bespoke B2B customer integrations.
- Strengthen engineering practices, product delivery and release management.
- Improve platform versioning and the rollout of new products and content across the customer base.
- Develop the business’s approach to data, security and technology governance.
- Define and execute an AI strategy, using AI to improve engineering productivity, accelerate delivery and create greater capacity without materially increasing headcount.
- Build a high-performing engineering culture that embraces innovation, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Partner with the executive team and investors, translating technology investment into commercial value and supporting the longer-term value creation plan.
The Successful Applicant
The successful Chief Technology Officer will combine strong technical credibility with pragmatic, commercially focused leadership. You will be comfortable operating strategically whilst remaining close enough to the technology and engineering team to provide meaningful direction.
Requirements
- Senior engineering leadership experience as a VP Engineering, Head of Engineering or CTO in a high-growth or early-stage environment
- Strong engineering leadership across modern web-based architectures and backend technologies.
- Experience of B2B SaaS, complex integrations or software-led businesses.
- A track record of improving engineering practices, scalability and delivery.
- An understanding of how AI can enhance software engineering and productivity.
- Strong commercial judgement and executive stakeholder management.
- Experience of PE-backed environments or similarly fast-paced, value-focused businesses.
- PHP/Laravel experience would be beneficial, but broader technical leadership capability is more important.
