Job description

The Senior Integration Engineer - API Development plays a critical role in designing, developing, and supporting enterprise integration solutions within the EDI Data Exchange organization with a leading health payor. This position is responsible for modernizing and scaling data exchange capabilities by building secure, high-performing APIs and integration frameworks that enable seamless data flow between internal systems, provider networks, partners, and regulatory entities., Reporting to the Manager of EDI Data Exchange, this individual will serve as a technical leader in bridging traditional EDI transactions (e.g., X12, HL7) with modern API-driven architectures. The Senior Integration Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams-including application development, infrastructure, data engineering, and external vendors-to deliver scalable, compliant, and reliable integration solutions that support healthcare operations, claims processing, member services, and provider data exchange.

Requirements

This role requires a strong blend of hands-on API development expertise, healthcare data exchange knowledge, and the ability to lead integration initiatives in a highly regulated environment.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures

  • Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js

  • Hands-on experience with API gateways (e.g., Apigee, Mulesoft, Azure API Management)

  • Experience with integration platforms / middleware (e.g., MuleSoft, Boomi, IBM Integration Bus)

  • Solid understanding of data formats and protocols including JSON, XML, SOAP, and REST

  • Experience working with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines , DevOps practices, and version control (Git)

EDI & Healthcare Data Exchange

  • Strong knowledge of EDI transactions (X12 270/271, 834, 835, 837, etc.)

  • Experience integrating EDI systems with modern APIs

  • Familiarity with HL7/FHIR standards and healthcare interoperability frameworks

  • Understanding of payer-provider data exchange workflows , claims processing, and eligibility systems

  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance, data privacy, and security requirements

Architecture & Integration Design

  • Experience designing end-to-end integration solutions across hybrid environments

  • Ability to translate business requirements into scalable integration architecture and API designs

  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture , message queues, and streaming (Kafka, MQ, etc.)

  • Strong problem-solving skills in debugging and optimizing integration performance

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with EDI teams, developers, vendors, and business stakeholders

  • Experience leading or mentoring junior engineers and guiding technical decision-making

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

  • Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed, regulated healthcare environment

Required Qualifications:

  • 5-8+ years of experience in integration engineering, API development, or related roles

  • 2+ years of experience within healthcare, insurance, or payer environments

  • 5 to 10 years exp with Mulesoft Development

  • 2+ years exp with other API development/platform (Kong a plus)

  • 5+ years application development, full stack preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Benefits & conditions

Where required by law, NTT DATA provides a reasonable range of compensation for specific roles. The starting hourly range for this remote role is ($57 - 78/hourly w2) . This range reflects the minimum and maximum target compensation for the position across all US locations. Actual compensation will depend on several factors, including the candidate’s actual work location, relevant experience, technical skills, and other qualifications.
