Job description

Building accurate attribution at Amazon scale is a challenging engineering problem. Our systems process more than 50 billion events per day and connect signals across advertising products, customer journeys, devices, channels, and conversion sources. Engineers on the team solve problems involving massive-scale data processing, distributed systems, data quality, identity and signal fragmentation, evolving privacy requirements, and complex attribution methodologies. Our systems must deliver measurements that are accurate, complete, timely, consistent, explainable, highly available, and cost efficient - even as the underlying advertising ecosystem continues to evolve. As a Software Development Engineer on the Attribution team, you will design, build, and operate distributed systems and data pipelines that ingest, enrich, join, and process massive volumes of advertising and conversion signals. You will work with technologies including Apache Spark, Amazon EMR, Apache Iceberg, Amazon S3, DynamoDB, ECS, and other AWS services to build highly scalable and reliable measurement infrastructure. You will own meaningful technical problems end to end, from understanding an ambiguous measurement problem and evaluating design alternatives to implementation, launch, and production operations. You will have opportunities to improve existing systems as well as design new architectures that improve scalability, data freshness, correctness, reliability, and cost efficiency. This is also a highly collaborative role. You will work closely with applied scientists, economists, and product managers to shape how Amazon Ads approaches attribution measurement. You will help translate new measurement methodologies and scientific ideas into scalable production systems, contribute to architectural decisions, and influence how attribution evolves across Amazon advertising products. The decisions you make will have direct business impact. The data produced by the team helps millions of advertisers understand the value of their campaigns and influences how advertising budgets are optimized. If you enjoy solving difficult distributed-systems and data problems, working across engineering and science, and seeing your work directly affect customers at global scale, this is an opportunity to have significant impact., Design, develop, and deliver software that produces measurement data consumed across Amazon’s full advertising suite - spanning display, search, native, and video

  • Build and maintain petabyte-scale data pipelines and services using technologies like Spark, EMR, and Java, inventing new big data paradigms to keep pace with rapid growth
  • Apply a variety of architectural approaches and design patterns to deliver maintainable, scalable, and well-tested solutions in a high-throughput environment
  • Navigate complex software challenges with creative problem-solving, adapting to evolving technical requirements and shifting priorities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners - including scientists, product managers, and engineers across teams - to define requirements and deliver high-quality features end-to-end
  • Drive engineering best practices including code reviews, testing strategies, operational excellence (alarms, runbooks, monitoring), and continuous improvement
  • Contribute to technical design discussions, identify trade-offs, and propose solutions that balance performance, cost, and long-term maintainability About the team The Measurement, AdTech, and Data Science (MADS) team defines and produces the metrics advertisers rely on to analyze the performance of their ad investments. Our charter is focused on the systems responsible for computing and distributing estimated conversions at massive scale. We work across a rich technology stack-combining AWS services like EMR, Kinesis, and AWS Batch with open-source technologies such as Spark and Presto-to deliver fast, reliable measurement at the speed advertisers demand.

Requirements

3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience, 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
