Job description

As medior IT engineer, you will work in a new, multidisciplinary team focused on the development and administration of our new research compute cluster for the analysis of complex biological data. Together with the senior IT engineer, you will build, test, and optimize the compute infrastructure. Your focus is on building and managing an HPC environment with significant CPU and GPU capacity and the possibility to upscale to Cloud environments. You will grow step-by-step in your role under the guidance of experienced colleagues. Your daily activities include:

  • Participation in the development and optimization of the HPC cluster.
  • Monitoring, logging, and documentation to ensure quality, performance, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with the senior IT engineer, researchers, and the Product Owner to realize new features.
  • Optimization of the compute cluster, workloads, and storage for speed, efficiency, and cost control.
  • Maintaining cluster (SLURM), servers, storage and virtual machines.
  • Answering user questions and troubleshooting.
  • Setting up and giving courses on HPC usage to scientists based on best practices. Work environment At the Department of Information Management, Research & Education (IM R&E), we are committed to helping researchers take their work to the next level - today and in the future. Our goal is to strengthen the scientific position of the Erasmus MC with an advanced IT infrastructure. Through various projects, we develop products and services that support researchers in collecting, processing and storing data efficiently and securely in a user-friendly manner. This way, we build a solid foundation for future scientific success. You will be part of a new multidisciplinary team. This team brings together experts from hardware, software development, data analytics and life sciences to create computing capacity to answer complex biological problems. As a pioneer within this team, you have the opportunity to help build the vision and organization of this team. You fall organizationally under the Information & Technology Directorate, and you are supervised by the Product Owner.

Requirements

As an IT engineer, you make an immediate impact with your creativity and technical knowledge. You work in an Agile way with the Product Owner and senior IT Engineer to translate customer needs into concrete solutions for the central compute cluster. You enjoy taking on and shaping new initiatives. Thanks to your curiosity, enthusiasm and troubleshooting skills you contribute to solutions that make a difference. You also have:

  • At least 3 years of experience administering compute infrastructure.
  • Hbo working level ideally with an HBO degree in computer sciences or a similar field.
  • Affinity with bioinformatics and scientific research.
  • Knowledge of I&T infrastructure, including storage, servers, network design, hardware (GPUs and CPUs), and virtual machines.
  • Experience working in a Linux environment and experience with high-performance compute and job scheduling techniques (e.g., SLURM).
  • Experience with cluster provisioning (e.g. Ansible playbooks).
  • Experience providing and managing scientific software environments, such as containers (Apptainer/Singularity), module systems (EasyBuild, Spack, Lmod) and Conda.
  • Familiarity with workflow managers such as Nextflow or Snakemake is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes such as incident management, change management, and SLAs.
  • Experience with Agile working or the willingness to develop these skills.
  • Perseverance and excellent written and verbal communication skills in Dutch and English or the willingness to take a language training.

Benefits & conditions

  • A 1-year contract with the prospect of a permanent position.
  • A gross monthly salary between € 3.724 and € 5.867 (salary scale 9 or 10) based on a full-time workweek of 36 hours.
  • A salary increase of 3,5% from May 2027, according to the collective labor agreement (CLA).
